Colby College had a team of outstanding athletes and immediately set out their stall to push the ball wide and outflank Vassar. They were pumped up and ready for this quarterfinal match-up jumping ahead with two quick tries before Vassar had even blinked. Vassar was again on Field 1 and playing up the incline and they certainly looked like they were running uphill. There was no respite from the Mules as they added another 3 tries despite a really good 10-minute spell from the Brewers that saw them pressurizing the Colby try line. But when the ball was turned over the electric Colby backs ran free.

The halftime talk was about making tackles and playing the game tight. There was no point spinning the ball wide to the Colby strength so the Vassar forwards took it up themselves to earn yards the hard way. They performed heroically for the entire second half and starved Colby of the ball. It did help that Vassar was now playing downhill and perhaps Colby took their foot off the gas with the lead they possessed. But in any event the picking game and direct approach from the backs allowed Vassar to score two good tries to make it 29-10. Although the men bowed out of the tournament the lessons learnt particularly in this game will stand them in good stead for the future.
