Brewers Drop 8-14 Decision to No. 9 St. Lawrence

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 15, 2017)- The Vassar College men's lacrosse team rallied to score three goals in the final quarter of it's 8-14 loss to No. 9 St. Lawrence University, Saturday afternoon inside Gordon Field.

In a game that took a full team effort, the Brewers struggled to find momentum offensively after going down 4-8 at the half. As the second half of play commenced, the Brewers connected with four more goals to close out the contest.

Chris Billups scored a hat trick and Sam Houston-Read netted two goals while Brendan DiStasio, Liam Moriarty and Matthew Lowry each secured one goal.

Conor Healy, and Jordan Dow surged the Saints offense with three goals apiece, while Cal Hynson notched two and six other players earned one.

Defensively, Vassar remained tight holding St. Lawrence to only 14 goals from their 45 shots. Matt Boyd collected 15 total saves, one shy of his career-best. The Brewers also collected 21 ground balls, and 18-out-of-21 successful clears though the Saints proved to be dominate winning 15-out-of-25 face-offs.

St. Lawrence opened the scoring with a goal less than 30 seconds into the first quarter to which Billups responded to two minutes later off a feed from James Thomas. A successful clear attempt from the Saints, sparked a 3-0 run for St. Lawrence.

As the second quarter got underway, St. Lawrence continued to attack, notching another goal before Thomas found DeStasio in scoring position and clinched Vassar's third goal with 8 minutes and 29 seconds left in the half. Though, a Brewer turnover would create the space for two more Saints goals. Trailing 8-3, Houston-Read passed to Moriarty and the Brewers cemented the score at 8-4 going into the half.

St. Lawrence would go on a 3-1 advantage during the third quarter. In the fourth and final quarter, the Brewers returned to the field aggressively and found success at the hands of Billups, Lowery, and Houston-Read.

With the loss, the Brewers move to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in Liberty League Conference play.

Vassar next plays Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
