POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 1, 2017) – The Vassar College women's tennis team swept doubles, which propelled the squad to an 8-1 victory over the Saints of St. Lawrence University in Liberty League play from Walker Field House Saturday. The win moved Vassar to 10-2 overall, while also upping its mark within the conference to an unblemished 5-0.
Doubles started out well for the Brewers, as Vassar picked up an early lead thanks to the No. 1 doubles pairing of
Shayna Becker and
Tara Edwards, who defeated Emily Wyman and Georgia Comber 8-3. The VC lead would double minutes later at No. 2 pairs, as
Kate Christensen and
Morgane Flournoy topped Alexandra Dadoly and Lia Peterson 8-4. The pairing is now 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, and 11-3 overall on the season.
The closest match in doubles came at the No. 3 position, as the Brewer pair of
Dasha Ivenitsky and
Connie Yoo trailed most of the match to Katherine Apt and Hallie Young of SLU. Down 7-6, the Brewer duet of Yoo and Ivenitsky burst forward to win the final three games of the set to earn the 9-7 victory.
The sweep in doubles meant that Vassar would need only two singles wins to claim the match, as Vassar looked to get revenge for last year's defeat to St. Lawrence University up in Canton. The first win came quickly for the Brewers, as Yoo won all 12 games against Dadoly in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Yoo has won her past seven matches and is now 14-4 on the year.
It looked like Flournoy was going to clinch the match at No. 4 singles for Vassar, but Edwards just beat her to the punch. Edwards picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles literally seconds before Flournoy claimed her 6-1, 7-5 victory to give Vassar the match victory. The win was Vassar's fifth consecutive win, as Vassar also upped its mark against regionally ranked opponents to 5-1. SLU came into the match ranked No. 18 in the Northeast region.
The Brewers weren't done, as Christensen would chalk up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 thanks to a strong serve and some great ground strokes over Comber. SLU got on the board at No. 2, as Apt defeated Becker 2-6, 6-4, 10-2, but the Brewers finished out the match at No. 6 with a win by Ivenitsky. The junior won her first set 6-2, but dropped her second set 6-2. In the super tiebreaker, Ivenitsky dominated winning the last nine points to earn a 10-1 win. Ivenitsky has now won her last three singles matches this year.
"
I'm really proud of the way we played today, we played very smart, we played really focused...they made us play a lot of balls but we were patient but yet we took opportunities when they came to us," said head coach
Kathy Campbell.
"
They were really tough today, they got everything back, they got a lot of balls in play so we all of us really had to grind, stay in it, stay focused, keep our heads clear but yeah, we did it," said sophomore
Morgane Flournoy.
Vassar will now focus on the Seven Sisters Championships at Mount Holyoke College next weekend, as VC will look to defend its 2016 title. VC will take on Bryn Mawr College and Smith College Saturday, before battling MHC and Wellesley College Sunday.
