POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 1, 2017) — Kelly Pushie put forth another stellar effort, as the Vassar College women's lacrosse team (4-4, 1-1 Liberty) lost to William Smith College (8-1, 2-0 Liberty) at Weinberg Field on Saturday, 14-4.
Pushie, who registered four points (3g, 1a) during VC's comeback win over Union College on Friday, tallied two scores to lead the Brewer offense against the Herons. Fellow freshman Tessa Waters also notched a pair of points, dishing out an assist to Emily Hamburger before netting a goal of her own.
Emily Chancey took the loss for Vassar with 12 stops, while Sarah Honan earned the win for William Smith with 12, as the Herons outshot the Brewers 33-21 overall and 26-16 in shots-on-goal. Although the Brewers lost the ground ball battle 25-14, they won the draw control fight 11-9.
Ali Burns and Alexandra Bird paced the Herons with five points on four scores and an assist. Melissa Moore (1g, 2a), Allie Flaherty (2g) and Bizzer Gahagan (1g, 1a) were also productive on offense.
The Herons struck first with a goal in the first minute, but Pushie countered with an unassisted score to level it at one. That's when William Smith took off, stringing together 10 straight goals over the two halves.
Pushie stepped up once again to halt the burst, netting another unassisted score about nine minutes into the second half, 11-2.
The Herons netted another two before the Brewers scored two of the final three goals of the game. Waters found Hamburger to make it 13-3 before finding the back of the net herself to conclude scoring with her team-leading 19th goal of the season.
Vassar heads to Rochester, NY for games against the University of Rochester (Friday, April 7 at 4 p.m.) and Rochester Institute of Technology (Saturday, April 8 at 2 p.m.).
