ROCHESTER, NY (April 7, 2017) — The Vassar College women's lacrosse team (4-5, 1-2 Liberty) saw its comeback bid fall short in an 8-7 loss at the University of Rochester (6-2, 2-1 Liberty) on Friday.
The Yellowjackets scored seven of the first eight goals before the Brewers netted six of the last seven. Freshman Kelly Pushie and Tessa Waters led the late-game spurt, scoring two goals apiece during the run.
Pushie (2g, 1a) finished with three points, while Waters (2g) and Julia Trudell (1g, 1a) both finished with two. Fiona MacLeod and Storm Sideleau both netted one goal, while Amelia Rivoir and Hannah Cho both dished out an assist.
Cho (3gb, 1cto) was also solid on defense, as well as Sydney Nemphos, who finished with a game-best five ground balls to go with a created turnover.
Emily Chancey took the loss for Vassar with 13 saves and three ground balls, while Conley Ernst earned the win for Rochester with seven stops and a ground ball, as the Yellowjackets outshot their visitors 29-18 overall and 21-14 in shots-on-goal.
Jamie Wallisch (3g, 2a) paced the Yellowjackets with five points, while Brigid Regan (3g, 1a) added four. Mara Karpp (1g, 1a) finished with two points, while Kaileigh Davis netted a goal and Marina Kern dished out an assist.
Playing in front of a crowd of 50, Rochester opened the game with a 7-1 run, broken up by a goal from MacLeod from Pushie.
Vassar found energy in the second half. After the Yellowjackets pushed their lead to as many as 7-1 with the first goal of the new period, the Brewers netted back-to-back goals off the sticks of Sideleau and Pushie.
Rochester scored its final goal of the game to push its lead to 8-3 with about 13 minutes remaining, but Waters netted consecutive goals to pull Vassar within 8-5 with about 10 minutes to go.
Trudell kept the momentum going with a goal from Cho before Pushie concluded scoring with a goal from Rivoir at the 2:12 mark.
Vassar concludes its Rochester trip at the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 8 at 2 p.m.
