ORANGE, CA (March 17, 2017) – The Vassar College women's team continued to have success during its spring trip Friday afternoon, as the No. 40 Brewers earned their third straight match with a convincing 8-1 victory over Chapman University in action from the Chapman Tennis Courts.
The Brewers (8-2) have now won five of their last six matches, and have dropped just three points winning by a combined match score of 24-3. Vassar, which was playing for their second time in as many days and third time in four days didn't show signs of fatigue, as it was strong from start to finish.
In doubles, Vassar got an early win from sophomore
Morgane Flournoy and junior
Kate Christensen over Nicole Fouts and Raven Hampton 8-0 to take the early lead. The duo has now won three straight, and is 9-3 on the season as a partnership. In fact, the pair has won its last two matches 8-0 and three of its last four victories have been clean sweeps.
Freshman
Ashley Fair made a homecoming of sorts for her, as the southern California native teamed with
Dasha Ivenitsky to knock off Danielle Simmons and Brenda Salome 8-1 to earn a 2-0 win. The Brewers would go into singles play with a 3-0 lead, as senior captain

Edwards earned a win at No. 3 singles due to retirement of Orikasa, as Edwards led 3-0 when the match ended, and Flournoy topped Hampton 6-3, 6-2 for her third straight win. Flournoy is now 8-2 in her last 10 singles matches. Becker knocked off Fouts 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles as well, moving to 12-5 on the season, proving victorious in her third straight match.
The lone win for Chapman (0-8) came at No. 1 singles, as Saunders rebounded from a 6-0 defeat in the first set to rally for a 0-6, 6-4, 10-4 win over Vassar's
Kate Christensen. Each team are ranked No. 17 in their respective regions, though the depth of VC proved too much in the end for CU.
"We really played "our game" today to win so decisively," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "In singles we displayed a nice balance of structuring the point and then taking offensive opportunities to close the point. All three doubles combinations played "clean" points, setting up our partners at the net."
"It's great to see team members playing with such confidence and utilizing many things we've been working on in practice. Also, our fitness is proving to be an asset as we competed well playing our fourth match in six days. We've gained momentum with each match in California. The match experience gained will serve us well the rest of the season."
Vassar will finish its spring break trip on Saturday afternoon, taking on Principia College at 10 a.m. PDT at University High School in Irvine, CA in non-conference action.
