POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 16, 2017) – The Vassar College women's tennis team kicks off its spring season this weekend in non-conference action against the Mules of Muhlenberg College and the Army Black Knights. The Brewers are coming off a strong fall season in which they had two dominant wins over Liberty League opponents Bard College and Union College. The team looks to hit the ground running and build off of an impressive 11-8 record from last spring.

Last Time Out: The last time the Brewers competed was back in 2016 on Oct. 1. Vassar took on Bard and defeated the Raptors 9-0 in decisive fashion at 9 a.m. on the Josselyn Tennis Courts. They then packed up and traveled to Schenectady, NY the same day to take on Union at 6 p.m. The Brewers picked another impressive win by a final tally of 8-1.
A Look At The Brewers (2-0, 2-0 Liberty)
- Vassar's singles unit was dominant against Bard, dropping a total of only five games in six different matches.
- The squad has added three freshmen this year who all made a considerable impact in the fall competing in a combined 22 singles matches and 25 doubles matches
- Kate Christenson continues to be the team's top performer with an 8-1 record in the fall. Her only loss came in the round of 8 at the ITA Northeast Regional.
- All nine of Vassar's players had at least two wins in both doubles and singles action during the fall. No player had more than four losses in either as well.
- The Brewers hold a .658 singles winning percentage and .707 doubles winning percentage
- Morgane Flournoy continues to be the doubles specialist for Vassar. She has a 9-2 overall record and has played and won with four different partners.
- Freshman standout Tara Edwards collected the most wins on the roster in the fall with 15, including eight in singles and seven in doubles.
- Unfortunately, this contest is one of only four that Vassar will host this spring. The Brewers are 14-1 in their last 15 home matches over the past two and a half years.
A Look At The Mules (0-1, 0-0 Centennial Conference)
- The Mules come into this weekend with only one scored match on the season in which they lost 9-0 to Wilkes College.
- Muhlenberg's roster consists of all returners, most of which are current sophomores.
- Due to weather concerns, the Mules had two of their scored matches in the fall cancelled or postponed.
- Jamie Rosenblum had the strongest fall season for the Muhls. She won the title in the top singles at the team's season-opening King's Invitational.
- Muhlenberg's doubles teams struggled in limited fall competition.
- After not winning any matches in their first invitational, both Jourdyn Buckheit and Shelby Knafo won two matches at the ITA Southeast Regional.
A Look At The Black Knights (3-3, 0-0 Patriot League)
- Army competes at the Division I level with Vassar being one of their only Division III opponents this season.
- The Black Knights have been very active in the spring season. The team has already competed in six and will have competed in nine scored matches by the time they host the Brewers.
- Six freshmen have joined the Army roster this year.
- The strongest doubles pairing for the Black Knights has been the duo of Kirby Einck and Hayley Allyson. The two have an 8-2 record and head the doubles unit which has a .597 winning percentage.
- Melanie Allen usually holds the top spot on the squad's singles unit and holds an admirable 7-5 record on the season.
- Kirby Einck has competed in the one and two singles positions and has racked up 10 singles wins on the season to go along with her 10 doubles wins.
