POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 6, 2017) – The Vassar men's squash team went 1-1 on Saturday as the hosted Swarthmore College and Boston University. The team topped Swarthmore in a close game 5-4, but fell to Boston, 9-0.
The Brewers kicked off the day with an early matchup against Swarthmore. Vassar picked up wins at No. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8 to earn the narrow victory. Mathieu Rizk earned a 3-0 win at No. 2 over Nathaniel Sadalow-Ash with scores of 11-4, 11-8, 11-7. In the third spot,
Caden Gruber topped Matt Peterson for the 3-0 victory (11-6, 11-6, 11-9). At No. 4,
Alex Riccio picked up a 3-0 win over Amanda Izes, scoring 11-5, 12-10, 11-2.
In the fifth spot,
Isaac Stuart also made quick work of Charlotte Iwasaki with a 3-0 win (11-2, 11-2, 11-3). And to round out the win for Vassar, Drew Hardin grabbed a 3-1 win at No. 8 (11-9, 1-9, 9-11, 11-7).
Against a formidable Terriers squad, the Brewers were unable to grab many wins. At No. 1,
Viraj Nadkarni fought hard, falling 3-1. The sophomore earned a 12-10 win in the first game, but then lost the next three to Hunter Chun.
The next seven spots behind the captain all fell 3-0 to give Boston the win. In the second and third spots, Rizk dropped by scores of 11-9, 11-4, 11-4 while Gruber fell 11-7, 11-1, 11-7.
Vassar is back on the courts next weekend at the Bard College Round Robin to be played on Saturday and Sunday in Annadale-On-Hudson, NY.
