Men's Squash Notes - Wesleyan, Bryant

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 15, 2017) – The Brewers emerged from last weekend with commanding wins over Colgate University and Siena College, but ultimately fell in straight games to Bard College.  Heading to Middletown, Connecticut, the team will face Wesleyan University at 11:00 a.m. and Bryant University at 2:00 p.m.

Last Time Out:  Against Siena College and Colgate University, Vassar won 6-3, 6-2, respectively.  However, versus Bard College, the Brewers lost in straight games.

A Look at the Brewers (4-3):
  • Junior Caden Gruber was tabbed as the Men's Squash Performer of the Week for his performance at the Bard College Round Robin, going 2-1 for the Brewers at the No. 3 spot.
  • Freshman Mathieu Rizk was named Rookie of the Week after playing in the No. 2 spot for the Brewers, chalking up 3-0 wins over Siena and Colgate.
  • Sophomore Captain Viraj Nadkarni continues to command the No. 1 position, where he captured a relentless 5-game victory over Siena this past Saturday.  The Brewers will look to his unyielding playing style to help bolster them through this weekend.
  • Senior Captain Alex Riccio plays at No. 4 with four wins this season, all of them decisively won throughout the last two weeks.
  • The Brewers have not competed against Bryant University nor Wesleyan University in recent years.  They will hope to take advantage of the young talent that has been developing on the squash squad to push them through these two games.

A Look at the Cardinals (0-0):
  • The Brewers will be the Cardinals' first game of the season, and they will be looking to come out strong.
  • In the 2016-2017 season, Wesleyan was ranked No. 25 nationally and finished at No. 7 in the NESCAC Championships.
  • The Cardinals featured a talented set of seniors last season, holding the entire class in the No. 1 through No. 4 spots. This season, Wesleyan will be looking to fill both their experience and leadership void, as there are no seniors on the team this year.

A Look at the Bulldogs (1-2):
  • The Bulldogs are hoping to build upon their lone win this season against Babson College.
  • In previous weeks, the club team lost to Boston University and Brandeis University by small margins.
  • Janak Appan plays consistently at the No. 1 spot and finds success there; he is undefeated for the season.
  • A young team, the Bulldogs will continue to build up their roster with first-year and second-year student-athletes.

Next up: Vassar will host Bates College and Haverford College in Kenyon Hall on December 2nd.
