Vassar Field Hockey Game Notes – Liberty League Tournament vs. Skidmore

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 30, 2017) – The Vassar College field hockey team is making its fifth straight Liberty League tournament appearance and will be looking for its first tournament win in program history when it travels up to Saratoga Springs to take on Skidmore College. The Brewers and the Thoroughbreds faced off earlier this season on October 13, and the Brewers fell by a score of 2-1.

Last Time Out: Vassar celebrated its 2017 Senior Day with a dominant 7-3 victory over the visiting New Paltz Hawks. The Brewers got out to hot start as senior Storm Sideleau buried a goal at the 18:05 mark and then over the next six minutes the team proceeded to find the back of the net three more times, including goals by Caveny and More scored just 22 seconds apart. Both Caveny and More added another goal and Sideleau dished out two assists to lead the Brewers to their 11th victory of the season.
 
A Look at The Brewers (11-6, 4-3 Liberty League): 
  • Vassar's has been dominant at home this season. With an undefeated record of 10-0 the Brewers have outscored their opponents 39-9 on Weinberg Field.
  • Junior Megan Caveny now holds the Vassar all-time record for most points (33) and goals (15) in a season. She is also second all-time in career points with 77, just 13 shy of the Vassar record.
  • Junior Emily Poehlein has nine goals on the season which is tied for 5th most in a single season at Vassar.
  • Sophomore Sam Plante leads the team with six assists, two more than any other Brewer.
  • The Brewers are outscoring their opponents by an average of 1.70 goals per game.
  • Vassar has had 206 penalty corners this season, an average of 12.12 per game, both of which lead the Liberty League by a wide margin.
  • Sophomore Liz Rotolo leads the Liberty League in goals against average (1.166) and is just one of two goalies in the league with a mark below 2.106.
  • The Brewers are third in the Liberty League in goals per game (2.67) and second in goals against per game (1.07).
  • Vassar ranks second in the Liberty League in shots per game (21.94) and shots on goal per game (14.00) both of which are much higher than Skidmore's respective 13.60 and 9.30.
  • 17 different players have been in the starting lineup at some point this year for Head Coach Michael Warari.
  • The Brewers have a diverse offensive attack with 15 players recording points on the season and 11 with either multiple goals or multiple assists.
 
A Look at the Thoroughbreds (13-6, 6-1 Liberty League): 
  • Skidmore is outscoring their opponents by an average of 1.06 goals per game.
  • The second half has been much friendlier to the Thoroughbreds as 30 of their 48 goals have come in that period despite having just one more shot than in the first period. The team also has 16 more corners in the first half than in the second.
  • On their home turf, Skidmore is an impressive 8-1 this season.
  • Junior Gabby Hyman leads the team's offense with 12 goals, 25 points, and four game winners this season.
  • Sophomore Miranda Davenport (18P, 6G, 6A) and junior Marissa Folts (14P, 3G, 8A) provide an extra layer of offensive support for Skidmore.
  • The Thoroughbreds have made a total of 10 defensive saves with Folts (3) and Kayla Rose (4) leading the way.
  • Skidmore has had some inconsistency in goal all season with Elizabeth Coughlin and Zoe McGuire splitting time almost exactly evenly over the course of the season.
  • Seven different players have scored a game winning goal for the Thoroughbreds this season.
  • The Thoroughbreds have had 11 different players start at least 13 games this season.
 
Against Skidmore All-Time: Vassar is 7-26 all-time against Skidmore College, but was able to take down the Thoroughbreds by a score of 2-1 in the regular season last fall.
 
Up Next: If Vassar beats Skidmore, they will take on the winner of Rochester and William Smith on Saturday, November 4th. The time and location of that game are still to be determined.
