Brewer Field Hockey Topped By Union In Double Overtime

SCHENECTADY, NY (October 22, 2017) – Union College got a goal from Bretta Beer 3:18 into the second overtime period to break a scoreless tie, as the Vassar College field hockey team finished Liberty League play with a 1-0 defeat to the Dutchwomen in action from Frank Bailey Field.

Despite the loss, Vassar (9-6, 4-2 Liberty League) still claimed the No. 3 seed in the Liberty League Tournament, and will travel to Skidmore College Wednesday, November 1 in the semifinal round. The University of Rochester will serve as the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, taking on William Smith College in the other semifinal.

Sunday's game didn't see much action until the second half, as the two teams combined for just five shots and none on goal in the first period. After halftime the Dutchwomen (7-8. 2-5 Liberty League) started to get their offense going, and had the game's best chance to that point in the 56th minute, as Jenna Smith had had shot stopped on the goal line by freshman Ally Aquilina-Piscitello.

After a timeout, VC came out with its best attacking flurry of the game, but shots by Megan Caveny and Mikayla Young were both saved by Heather Poisson to send the game to overtime. In the first overtime period, Vassar dominated the first few minutes, but Poisson made five stops over a 2:56 span to keep the game scoreless.

After that sequence, Union had two strong chances but Vassar keeper Liz Rotolo made a pair of saves to deny the Dutchwomen. VC saw junior Alyssa More had four shots before the end of the first overtime, but none would dent the back of the cage. In the second overtime, Union earned a penalty corner three minutes in, and Beer deflected a shot from Katherine Talacci past Rotolo for the game-winner.

The Brewers, who were playing without starters Monica Feeley, Cristina Lopez and Sam Plante for the second straight game, were outshot 16-15 on the day. Union also held a slight 9-8 edge in penalty corners. More finished with a team-high six shots, four going on goal, and Molly Youse and Caveny each added two shots apiece as well. Rotolo finished with four saves for Vassar, while Poisson added 10 stops for Union.

Vassar will be back in action on Wednesday evening, hosting undefeated University of Scranton at 7 p.m. in non-conference action from Weinberg Field.
