Men's Soccer Drops League Game At Hobart

GENEVA, NY (October 21, 2017) –  The Vassar men's soccer team dropped their first Liberty League match of the season on Saturday at Hobart, 2-1. The loss drops the Brewers to 5-1-1 in the conference as Hobart now overtakes them in the standings as the No. 1 team.

Vassar's offense was steady in the first half, firing off six shots to just two for the Statesmen. Neither side found the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes as the defenses for both teams held strong.

Hobart opened the second frame with a score in the 50th minute. Nick Wigglesworth headed in a pass by Nick Dosky right under the crossbar for the first goal of the game.

The Brewers had an answer nearly 90 seconds later. Noah Snider made a pass from the top of the box to fellow senior Jose Novas who was right in front of the goal and able to shoot through traffic for the equalizing score.

As the game progressed, each side had their chances and it looked for sure that the game was headed for extra time. But Hobart's Patrick Shulz had other ideas. The senior carried the ball down the right sideline, cut in towards net and unleashed a shot into the far side of the net for the game-winner.

The score kept his side unbeaten in the league and put them ahead of the Brewers in the conference standings.

Matt Marcelino made his third straight start in net and picked up two saves against 10 total shots.

Offensively, Novas led the team with two shots while knocking in his team-leading seventh goal of the season. All together the Brewers had nine shots with just two on goal.

Up next, Vassar faces RPI on Wednesday before closing out the regular season with Ithaca on Saturday.
