CANTON, NY (October 20, 2017) -- The Vassar College women's volleyball team had its 12-match winning streak stopped Friday night in Liberty League action at St. Lawrence University, dropping a heartbreaker in five sets to the Saints with scores of 25-23, 25-20, 16-25, 23-25 and 15-12. The loss was Vassar's first since September 16, while the defeat was Vassar's first within conference play this year.
With the loss, Vassar (20-4, 5-1 Liberty League) will face off with Clarkson University Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Potsdam, NY to see who will host the Liberty League Tournament. If Vassar wins, then the Brewers will host the conference championships on Friday and Saturday, November 3-4. If the Golden Knights top the Brewers and Ithaca College knocks off Union College, then Ithaca College would earn the regular season title. If Ithaca and Vassar both fall, then the tournament will be held in Potsdam, NY with Clarkson University serving as the host. VC has already clinched a playoff spot.Â
The Brewers fell behind early going down 2-0, but rallied back to tie the match at two sets apiece forcing a deciding fifth set. In the fifth, Vassar fell behind 9-6 but tallied three points consecutively, two on kills from
Devan Gallagher to tie the set at nine apiece. SLU answered with a three-point stretch of its own, clinching the victory on a kill by Julia Wagner.Â
Junior
Annie MacMillan finished with 47 assists and nine digs in the loss, while sophomore
Jane McLeod tied her career best with 22 kills on 58 attempts, hitting a solid .224 for the match. McLeod added six digs for Vassar, while Gallagher finished with 17 kills and a career-high 23 digs. Sophomore
Colette Cambey finished with nine kills, while
Jennifer Kerbs added seven terminations as well for VC. The Brewers finished with 61 kills on the night, but nine blocks and nine service aces for the Saints (16-10, 3-3 Liberty League) proved to be the difference.Â
St. Lawrence got 17 kills from Wagner to pace its offensive attack, while Masha Kolesnikova and Grace Kelly posted 12 and 13 kills respectively. Kolesnikova also finished with five aces and 19 digs, and setter Katie Kull chalked up 46 helpers, nine digs, three blocks and five kills.Â
