Men's Rugby Takes Down Oneonta

Vassar College Men
Oneonta, NY
Sunday October 15th, 2017

Vassar Men
It was under a sunny blue sky in upstate New York where the Brewers finally found some shape to their game this fall. They ran in twelve tries and when they did the simple things well it paid dividends. More worrying was that they conceded three tries and the tackling generally was just not good enough. The danger for this group is to look at the score and think that they are good when an honest analysis demands that the team look at their error count.

Sunday October 15th, 2017
Vassar College Men  74 v 17 SUNY-Oneonta Men
Tries: Rob Eder (1), Gary Garcia (3), Louie Brown (1), Joe Simon (3), Evan Roberts (1), Nick Crooks (1), Dale Lord (1) & George Sheppard (1).
Cons: Stephen Kpundeh (7).

Vassar Number 8 Rob Eder opened the scoring for the Brewers and there was a steady procession of scores through the first half. Eight tries in 40 minutes was the return but that Vassar allowed 2 tries in that first period of play, against a team starved of possession, was disconcerting.  Early on the team did run some patterns that proved effective but they were also aided by a host of penalties made by the SUNY-Oneonta team. It allowed Vassar to get good field position and run their set piece to create more pressure.

Oneonta, for the most part, opted to not compete in the lineouts and the rucks and that was another important factor as the Brewers won possession easily. Vassar did throw some silly wild passes that were uncalled for but even then the home team did not capitalize.

Six different forwards scored tries and it underlined the superiority they enjoyed up front but again one has to remember the degree to which the opposition attempted to compete.

Next weekend Vassar faces the Division Champions of last year and local rival SUNY-New Paltz. The test will undoubtedly be far more severe. The physical commitment will have to be far, far greater and players will need to be on their mettle.
