POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 14, 2017) – For the second straight day, the Vassar men's soccer team earned a 2-1 win. On Saturday, it was over a St. Lawrence squad that began the day in first place in the conference standings. With the win, the Brewers now own a 5-0-1 league record and are in first place with 16 points.
"St. Lawrence is one of the top programs in the country and clearly the top program in the league so any kind of result against St. Lawrence is huge," said Head Coach
Andy Jennings. "When they scored, I was just so impressed with our attitude in terms of the players and their ability to come back and score the winning goal."
Jose Novas tallied his league leading fourth game-winning-goal of the season to propel the Brewers past the Saints and into first place. He also notched an assist on the day for his fourth of the season. The senior now leads the team with six goals and 16 points, and is tied for the team lead in assists.
The Brewers got things going early when in the 6
th minute
Henrik Olsson found the back of the net off the assist from Novas. The senior forward took a hard shot that was blocked by the Saints defense, but
Olsson was right there to collect the ball and score putting his team up 1-0.
VC played from ahead the rest of the half, but continued to pepper shots on the St. Lawrence defense. In the first half alone, Vassar fired off 14 shots and earned six corner kicks to keep the pressure on.
The Saints offense answered in the second half with under 15 minutes remaining. Ryan Roche found Jethro Dede streaking down the middle of the field. As keeper,
Matt Marcelino came out of the net, Dede made the move past him and scored for the equalizing tally.
Vassar quickly went back on the offensive and took the lead back in the 85
th minute.
Mattie Mrlik made a nice touch in the box to keep the ball away from St. Lawrence and the ball found the feet of Novas.
The senior collected the ball and scored for the home side.
Marcelino made his second straight start in net, picking up his fourth win of the season.
The senior made five saves against nine total shots.
The Brewers will have some much needed rest before their next match on Saturday, October 21 as the team heads to Geneva to face Hobart.
