Vassar Men’s Swimming and Diving Notes – Montclair State

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 30, 2017) – The Vassar College men's swimming and diving teams will host its final home meet of the 2016-17 season on Wednesday evening, hosting the Red Hawks of Montclair State University in Kresge Pool. The Brewers will finish its dual meet schedule Wednesday, in anticipation of the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming and Diving Championships in Ithaca, NY in a few weeks.

Last Time Out: The Vassar College men's swimming and diving squad competed in the Skidmore Sprint Invitational last Saturday, earning first place after some strong contributions across the board. Vassar edged host Skidmore College, 466-433, competing for the second time in four days.
 
A Look At The Brewers:
 
  • Freshman Jordan Kalina shined for the Brewers, as he swam the longest event of the day in the 500 free, taking the top spot with a 5:03.42 while earning 16 points. 
  • Walker was back in the pool for the 100 fly, and helped VC go 1-2-3 in the event. Walker edged Jonah Strand with a 53.16, right on his seed time, while Strand nearly bested his seed time by a minute with a 53.75. 
  • Freshman Yoav Yaron continued to improve every meet, as he established a new season-best time in the 50 free with a 24.70, taking third place.
  • Junior Luke Morrison had one of the best races of any Brewer on Saturday, as he finished second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:36.79. 
  • The Brewers would dominate the 50 fly event, chalking up the top five finishers to record over 62 total points, which was the difference of the meet. 
  • Walker rolled to a win with a 24.17 in the 50 fly, followed up by a 25.84 time for Taylor. Morrison was third with a 25.89, Imiolek took fourth in 26.59 and Kalina added a 27.36 for fifth place.
  • In the 100 free, Colletta took third place after swimming a 53.19, and Cerutti was second in the 50 backstroke with a time of 27.50. 
  • The 100 yard IM saw Strand add another victory in a 56.13, which was over a half-second faster than his seed time. Morrison was third for Vassar with a 1:01.48 as well.
  • In the final swim of the day, Vassar saw its relays go 1-2, as Walker, Gabriel, Cerutti and Yaron chalked up a 1:35.79 in the 200 free relay for the win. 
  • Senior Walter Gabriel also picked up 10 points in the 500 free, swimming a 5:39.24 for fifth place.
  • Wednesday's meet will be the final home meet ever for Vassar's four seniors in Walker, Gabriel, Patrick Lai and Chris Cerutti.
 
A Look At The Red Hawks:
 
  • The Red Hawks come into the week with an 8-3 overall mark in dual meets, earning wins in four of their last five outings.
  • MSU knocked off William Paterson this past weekend in a New Jersey Athletic Conference with a score of 158-111.
  • James Singlewald, Kevin Clauss, Steven Roth and Charles Cobbertt swam 1:40.52 to take the top spot in the 200 medley relay.
  • Singewald led Montclair State in a 1-2-3 showing in the 100 breaststroke. Singewald went 1:02.90 with Dan Knepple (1:02.3) and Anthony Kalatatis (1:06.87) placing second and third, respectively.
  • Benjamin Hernandez won the first section of the 1-meter diving with a score of 175.70 points against WPU.
  • Cobbertt and Knepple were winners in the 100 freestyle (50.84) and 200 breaststroke (2:21.45), respectively.
  • Sophomore Hunter Romanowski won the 50 free with a 22.66 against WPU last Saturday.
  • Wednesday's meet is the final dual meet of the season for Montclair State, before competing in the Metropolitan Championships in New Brunswick, NJ on February 17-19.
  • Last year, Vassar fell to the Red Hawks in Montclair, NJ 128-102, and is currently riding a 14-meet losing skid to MSU dating back to 2001-02.
 
Up Next: VC will have a few weeks off before finishing its season at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming and Diving Championships at Ithaca College February 15-18.
