Women’s Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker In Five At Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (September 7, 2016) – Freshman Jane McLeod posted 17 kills for the Vassar College women's volleyball team, but a late game five rally by the Ephs of Williams College pushed the hosts to a five-set win in action from Chandler Gym Wednesday evening.

The Brewers (0-5) played their second consecutive five-setter on Wednesday, after not going the distance in a match for 56 contests. VC dropped Wednesday's outing with scores of 22-25, 25-17, 25-18, 21-25 and 15-11.

In the opening set, Vassar was great in the back row, posting 19 digs while chalking up 15 kills to take an early match advantage. The game was back-and-forth with the game last being tied at 22, which was the 11th tie of the opening set. The Brewers would capture the final three points though, thanks to a kill from senior Gabby Miller at 23-22, while sophomore Devan Gallagher provided the kill at 24-22 to give VC the set.

In the second frame, Williams (1-0) was strong offensively, chalking up 15 kills on a .448 hitting percentage to even the match at one set apiece. The third set saw each team struggle attacking, but the Ephs posted five service aces which as the difference. In the fourth, VC's defense was once again on display as the Brewers rejected four Eph attempts while posting 24 digs, seven from senior Sierra Tobin.

The turning point in the fourth set game with VC trailing 16-12, as Gallagher started an 8-0 run with a kill. The sophomore standout rejected two attacks in the spurt, while Miller also chalked up two kills to help put VC up 20-16. Williams pulled to within two at 22-20, but Alex Sams sealed the set with a kill to send the game to a fifth set.

In the final game, Williams jumped out to a 7-4 lead, but Vassar stormed back with six straight points, three coming on kills from McLeod to take a 10-7 lead. With the score 11-8, the hosts would rally to earn the victory thanks to seven consecutive points.

McLeod led all scorers with her kill total, posting the 17 terminations on 47 swings, hitting .234 on the match. The freshman added eight digs and three assisted blocks as well. Gallagher added 12 terminations along with seven total blocks, while Miller chalked up her third consecutive double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. It was the first time a Vassar player has posted three straight matches with a double-double since Taylor Mosley did it September 7-11, 2013.

Sophomore Annie MacMillan continued to play well for the Brewers, as she dished out 36 assists to go with 11 digs, while Tobin finished with a career-high 21 digs. Sophomore Lauren Ninkovich also finished with nine digs, while freshman Jorden Schreeder added seven digs. Sams also contributed eight kills, five digs and three blocks for VC, which finished the match with a 54-26-177 attacking clip (.158).

Tori Jasuta posted 15 kills and 20 digs for Williams, while Ally Ostrow posted 12 kills and 12 digs. Alex Newton also chalked up 41 assists and 11 defensive ups for the home team.

Vassar will host the Vassar Invitational this weekend, hosting Alfred University, Pittsburgh-Bradford, Purchase College and the University of New England with action starting Friday evening at 4 p.m. in the Athletics and Fitness Center.
