POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 7, 2016) —Sophomore forward Audrey Pillsbury scored late to level the game, but the Vassar College women's soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime against Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday.
Goalkeeper Stephanie Tapolsky took the loss for Vassar (1-2) after making seven saves, while Jullian Fernandez earned the win for WCSU (2-2) after making four stops. Ultimately, the Brewers outshot the Colonials, 17-15.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first half before the game opened up in the second. WCSU junior forward Autumn Sorice put the Colonials on the board, 1-0, after creating her own shot. In the 57th minute, Sorice fired from about 25 yards out straight into the back of the net, just to the keeper's right.
Eleven minutes later, the Brewers leveled competition at one. Junior defender Carolina Alvarez crossed low from the left to Pillsbury, who found the left side of the netting from just inside the six.
During the remainder of the half, the Colonials made six shots to the Brewers' two, but neither team could find the back of the net.
Overtime ensued, and in the 96th minute, WCSU senior midfielder Celia DeVoe spiked the ball over defenders into the top right corner of the net on a free kick following a Vassar red card, giving the Colonials a 2-1 win.
"We didn't show up for the whole 90 minutes today," head coach Corey Holton said. "We started flat and weren't able to finish our chances. Audrey's goal was a great build up and a good finish to bring us even, but we needed to maintain that kind of intensity for the entire match"
Vassar hits the road for the Stevens Engineering Cup at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. The two-day event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 12:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 11 at the same time.
