Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Gilmore Nets Two In VC's Comeback Thriller

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 6, 2016) — After equalizing the match with a header in the 83rd minute, Tyler Gilmore scored the game-winner with 19 seconds remaining to give the Vassar College men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Manhattanville College on Tuesday.

"We have that killer instinct all the way to the last second," Gilmore said. "We can beat any team. We're just going to keep pushing, keep working hard every practice."

Both scores came off or shortly after set pieces. Leading up to the first goal, Stephen Jennings nearly found the back of the net off Hayden Van Brewer's corner kick, but his shot was deflected by freshman goalkeeper Tim Cartsing. After a few touches, Van Brewer gained possession before crossing to Gilmore, who soared in with the header from close range, 1-1.

Then, with 19 seconds remaining, the Brewers used the same one-two punch to score the go-ahead goal. This time, Gilmore headed the ball into the bottom left corner, thanks to a corner kick by Van Brewer from the left side.

Vassar had multiple scoring opportunities throughout the game, outshooting Manhattanville 22-6, but Cartsing (2-1) spoiled the Brewers' chances time after time, collecting eight saves during the contest. Goalkeeper Matt Marcelino (3-0) earned the win for Vassar, making two stops in 90 minutes of playing time.

Both sides were held scoreless through the first half, but 14 minutes into the second, Robin Schaufele passed ahead to Oskar Martinsson, who scored from straight on just inside the crowded goal box. With that, the Brewers found themselves playing from behind, but they remained composed to net two goals in the final minutes of regulation.

"We're very happy with the way we played," head coach Andy Jennings said. "Manhattanville is a great team — they played very well, they're a very solid program, so it was a good win for us."

The Brewers continue their stint at home, playing their next three games on Gordon Field in Poughkeepsie, NY. Vassar hosts William Paterson University on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. and Elms College on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. before concluding its homestretch versus New Paltz on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m.
