POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 10, 2016) — For the first time since 2007, the Vassar College men's soccer team has started the season with four straight wins after notching a 2-0 shutout over William Paterson University at Gordon Field on Saturday.
Freshman
Mattie Mrlik assisted on the game-winner, which was scored by
Mitch Davis in the first half, before finding the back of the net himself, thanks to a help from
Hayden Van Brewer in the second.
Goalkeeper
Matt Marcelino earned his fourth win for the Brewers after making four stops, while Kyle Quigley took the loss after making four saves for the Pioneers (3-2-0). Vassar goalkeeper
Will Marment also saw time in net, holding down the fort for the final 10 minutes.
"Very good win against a good team," coach
Andy Jennings said. "William Paterson had a winning record coming in. I'm very pleased. It was a good, solid win."
The match was fairly even as far as possession goes, as Vassar outshot William Paterson 14-13. The Brewers rattled off five shots in the first half and nine in the second, while the Pioneers totaled six and seven, respectively.
For the first goal, Mrlik dribbled down the middle before feeding Davis to his right. Davis came from an angle to fire the game-winner hard and low into the far corner in the 16
th minute, marking the sophomore's first collegiate goal.
The Brewers cushioned their lead to
2-0 in the 79
th minute. Van Brewer lofted a free kick from the midfield into the box, where Mrlik tapped his shot in from just outside the six.
With that, Mrlik paces the Brewers with six points on a two goals and a pair of assists, while Van Brewer leads the team with three helps so far this season.
The Brewers return to the pitch to face the Blazers of Elms College (0-3-0) on Sunday, September 11. Kickoff at Gordon Field is set for 2 p.m.
