Vassar Women’s Tennis Match Notes – Bard, Union

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 30, 2016) – The Vassar College women's tennis team will finish its fall season this weekend with a pair of matches against Bard College and Union College. The Brewers will start the day Saturday at home against Bard at 9 a.m. on Joss Courts before traveling to Schenectady, NY to take on Union College at 3:30 p.m. in more Liberty League action.

Last Time Out: The Brewers competed in the ITA Northeast Regional last weekend, and junior Kate Christensen made it all the way to the Round of 8 before being bounced by eventual finalist Sarah Mensah of Brockport. Shayna Becker and Connie Yoo earned spots in the second round last weekend, while Tara Edwards also made the Round of 8 in the consolation bracket.
 
A Look At The Brewers (0-0, 0-0 Liberty)
 
  • The Brewers have played all tournaments this season so far, so Saturday's matches will be the first dual matches of the season for Vassar.
  • VC is playing well so far this year, winning 60.7 percent of its singles matches while earning wins in 65.7 percent of doubles action.
  • Junior Kate Christensen is having a strong start to her junior season, as she is currently 8-1 in singles action.
  • Senior Shayna Becker has going 5-2 thus far this season in singles play, while posting four wins in doubles play as well.
  • Freshman Tara Edwards is second on the team in singles wins with six, while also chalking up a 5-4 mark in doubles.
  • Sophomore Morgane Flournoy has been the doubles' specialist so far, as she has registered a 7-2 mark in pairs action in 2016-17.
  • Senior Connie Yoo has gone in 4-3 in singles play so far this season, posting a 5-2 mark in doubles play.
 
A Look At The Raptors (4-3, 0-0 Liberty)
 
  • Bard comes to town with a 4-3 mark this weekend, having earned a 5-4 win over Ramapo College. Bard also has wins over Elmira, Mount Saint Mary and St. Joseph's (LI).
  • MacKenzie Wardell has been great for the Raptors, going 6-1 in singles play while earning wins in five of her doubles matches.
  • Amelia Tiemann has played No. 2 singles this season for Bard, chalking up a 3-3 mark at the second position.
  • Bella Martinez has chalked up three wins this season, and is one of three players coming off a win.
  • Lily Schwartz has been the No. 1 player for the Raptors this season, but has struggled to an 0-7 record thus far this year.
  • The double's teams for Bard have chalked up a cumulative .476 winning percentage.
 
A Look At The Dutchwomen (0-0, 0-0 Liberty League)
 
  • The Dutchwomen of Union College come into the matches this weekend having only played in tournaments, as Friday's match with Skidmore will be their first Liberty League contest this year.
  • Union went 9-7 as a team in 2015-16, while posting a 2-5 record in Liberty League action. Senior Natalia Pronchick led the team last year in wins with 10.
  • Junior Julianne Loree also picked up 10 wins at the No. 3, 4 and 5 positions in 2015-16, finishing the season with a 7-3 mark in her last 10 matches.
  • Pronchick was 6-6 at the No. 1 doubles position last year, while totaling 10 doubles wins as a junior.
  • Union has five players back from last year's team, while adding five freshmen to the roster in 2016-17.
 
Up Next: The Brewers will be off until February after Saturday's affair, as the two Liberty League matches finish the fall portion of the season.
