Vassar Drops Road Match After Late Goal, 1-0

RIVERDALE, NY (September 3, 2016) — The Vassar College women's soccer team fell 1-0 on the road after a late goal put New York University on top Saturday.

NYU junior midfielder Steph Ho scored the game's only goal with about eight minutes remaining to give the Violets an edge. The game-winner was set up by freshman forward Alex Benedict, whose initial shot hit the post before Ho tipped in the rebound.

Although it was a low-scoring game, both sides had many opportunities to score.

"It was a pretty evenly matched game," head coach Corey Holton said. "I think we handled the first half very well, but we didn't put away our chances."

In all, NYU outshot Vassar 17-12. Vassar goalkeeper Stephanie Tapolsky took the loss with seven saves, while Cassie Steinberg made nine stops on the other end of the pitch.

The first half featured six shots each from Vassar and NYU, but both teams were held scoreless deep into the second half. Shortly after the Violets went ahead in the 83rd minute, Rebecca Andrews nearly found the back of the net, but Steinberg made one final save to secure the shutout.

"We created a decent amount of opportunities," Holton said. "We have to finish. We have to stay engaged the entire time and not let up for a second. I just think we need to work on going hard and winning 50-50 ball."

With the loss, the Brewers fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Violets improve to 2-0.

Vassar returns to the pitch for its home opener on Wednesday, September 7. The Brewers will face the Colonials of Western Connecticut State on Gordon Field, with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
