Vassar Field Hockey Game Notes – Hartwick

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 26, 2016) – The Vassar College field hockey team will look to continue its winning ways on Wednesday afternoon, hosting the Hawks of Hartwick College in non-conference action on Weinberg Field. Vassar was 3-0 last week, including two road wins and a home victory over No. 10 Montclair State. In all, VC has won six straight, all by way of shutout, and has allowed just two goals all season.

Last Time Out: The Brewers ended a 33-game road Liberty League losing streak on Saturday afternoon, knocking off St. Lawrence University 3-0 with their sixth straight shutout victory. Sophomore Emily Poehlein scored the game-winning goal for Vassar with help from Storm Sideleau, and sophomore Megan Caveny notched two scores in the victory. Sophomore Paige Amico made five saves as well in the win.

A Look At The Brewers (8-1, 1-0 Liberty):
  • Vassar tied its program record for consecutive wins Saturday afternoon at St. Lawrence, and will look to earn its seventh straight victory for the first time in program history Wednesday afternoon.
  • Sophomore Megan Caveny is currently seventh in the Liberty League in points per game with 1.67, posting five goals and five assists to pace the Brewers.
  • Second-year goalkeeper Paige Amico leads the conference in save percentage and goals against average this season, allowing 0.28 goals per game while chalking up a .929 save percentage.
  • During the last six game winning stretch, Vassar has outscored its opponents 31-0. On the season, VC has outscored opposition 35-2.
  • The Brewers have allowed zero goals in the opening half this season, outscoring its opponents 18-0 in the first period.
  • Vassar had posted eight game-winning goals this season, scored by eight different players.
  • Freshman Cristina Lopez won her second consecutive Liberty League Rookie of the Week honor this week after scoring once and dishing out an assist last week.
  • VC currently leads Division III field hockey in three different categories: goals against average (0.22), save percentage (0.929) and shutouts per game (0.89).
  • Vassar is currently ranked No. 25 in the average computer rating on FieldHockeyCorner.com. VC is ranked behind just Skidmore and Rochester in the North Atlantic region.
A Look At The Hawks (6-2, 1-2 Empire 8)
  • Hartwick is coming off a 1-0 loss to Washington and Jefferson in Empire 8 action last Saturday, and have now lost two in a row after starting the season 6-0.
  • The Hawks are 2-1 on the year on the road, defeating Keuka College (5-1) and Oneonta (1-0), before falling at Utica College 2-1 last week.
  • Hartwick leads the Empire 8 in save percentage this season with a .903 rate, which is fourth in the country coming into the week.
  • Keeper Shannon Carter is 17th in the country in goals against average with a 0.89 clip, while posting the country's fifth-best save percentage in Division III.
  • Hartwick ranks sixth in the Empire 8 in scoring average, posting 2.15 goals per game, chalking up 98 shots this season which is the seventh in the conference.
  • Sarah Ryan is sixth in the conference in goals this year with five, while Lex Richards is 10th with four scores. Courtney Coons has a team-best two game-winners for the Hawks.
  • Head coach Anna Meyer is in her 29th season at Hartwick, posting 305 career wins during her career.
Against Hartwick All-Time: The Brewers are 4-7 against Hartwick all-time, though VC has won the last four meetings in the series, including a 4-2 last year at Hartwick. Hayley Beach posted  a goal and an assist in last season's victory.

Next Up: The Brewers will travel to Geneva, NY on Saturday for one of the biggest games of the season, taking on the No. 11 Herons of William Smith College at 1 p.m. in a rematch of the Liberty League semifinal game from last fall.
