CANTON, NY (September 24, 2016) – The Vassar College field hockey team kept its impressive shutout streak rolling on Saturday, while also snapping an 11-year streak in the process as the Brewers opened Liberty League play with a 3-0 whitewashing of St. Lawrence University on North Country Field.
Vassar (8-1, 1-0 Liberty League) has now not allowed a goal in its last 420 minutes of field hockey, while outscoring opposition 31 over the last six games. The win also marked the end of a long-standing streak, as VC snapped a 33-game road-conference losing streak, which dated back to the 2005 season.
The Brewers had to deal with some early pressure from the host Saints (3-4, 0-1 Liberty), as SLU got the first shot on goal after Camille Burger forced sophomore
Paige Amico to make a save. VC would then go on the offensive, hemming the Saints in their own zone as sophomore
Megan Caveny nearly scored twice but was denied by SLU keeper Julia Hudson.
Vassar broke through though at the 11:55 mark of the contest, as sophomore
Emily Poehlein scored her third goal of the season, slotting home a pass to the right side of the cage off a nice backhanded pass from junior
Storm Sideleau.
Nearly seven minutes later, the Brewers doubled their lead thanks to another sophomore, as Caveny potted her fourth of the season. Freshman
Cristina Lopez sent the ball across the goalmouth to the left side, where Caveny slipped the ball past Hudson for the tally. SLU would respond though, posting three penalty corners towards the end of the half, but Vassar was able to withstand the siege from St. Lawrence.
After the halftime intermission, the Brewers came out and fired the first six shots of the second half, four coming from Caveny. Her persistence paid off, as she was able to convert a gorgeous goal on the fourth attempt to give Vassar a 3-0 lead. On the play, classmate
Mikayla Young centered the ball towards the middle of the cage and Caveny smoothly one-timed the shot into the left side of the cage for the score.
That was plenty of offense for the Brewers, as the defensive unit and Amico once again stood firm in their eighth shutout of the season. Amico made five stops for the Brewers, while Hudson stopped 12 shots for the Saints. VC outshot its hosts 17-7, and held a slight 9-6 edge on penalty corners. The six-game winning streak for Vassar matches its longest in program history, set back during the 2014 season.
The Brewers will now look to set a new school record for consecutive wins, hosting Hartwick College Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in action from Weinberg Field.
