POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 17, 2016) — The Vassar College women's soccer team (1-4-1) battled back but settled for a 2-2, double-overtime draw with Oneonta (2-2-3) at Gordon Field on Saturday.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the first half, Vassar's Savannah Cutler and Rebecca Andrews scored consecutive goals for a 2-1 advantage. But Oneonta struck again with just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation to level the game at 2-all. Overtime ensued, but neither team could find their golden goal.
"Really proud of the effort of our team," head coach Corey Holton said. "We've had a rough week, so coming out and getting a point today is good. It didn't fall our way. We still are looking to score a few goals, but I think we broke through a little bit today, and we're moving in the right direction."
In the 8th minute, Julie Steinhauer put the Red Dragons on the board. Following a corner kick by Julia Cranz, Steinhauer tipped the ball into the right corner for an early lead.
Three minutes later, Cutler notched her first goal of the season. After breaking away on a pass, Cutler found an empty net, kicking the ball low into the far left side.
The Brewers took a 2-1 edge in the 61st minute, as Jordan Moss slotted a pass to her right, finding Andrews, who struck her first goal into the top right corner.
The Red Dragons leveled competition at two 17 minutes later. Laura Rolston headed her second goal of the year over multiple defenders, following a corner kick by Cranz.
Goalkeeper Phoebe Reuben made two saves in her first start of the season, while Emilie Mull made eight. Overall, the Brewers outshot the Red Dragons, 17-7.
"I'm just really proud of everybody after today," senior captain Kelsey Hamm said. "We had a really slow start to the season, but we're working really hard today and everyone battled. We battled from being down 1-0 in the beginning and worked our hearts off out on the field today."
Vassar next plays at Montclair State University on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Kickoff from MSU Soccer Park is set for 7 p.m.
"Takeaways from today are we know we're a good team, and we know we can play with a good team," Hamm said. "As long as we work our hardest, good things will come from it."
