MONTCLAIR, NJ (September 21, 2016) — The Vassar College women's soccer team (1-5-1) held the possession edge, but ultimately fell 1-0 versus Montclair State University (6-1-1) at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday.
The Brewers outshot the Red Hawks 15-10 overall, doubling their number of shots in the second half, 10-5. Vassar took nine shots in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but all of them were either saved or blocked.
"I feel like we can't catch a break this season," coach Corey Holton said. "We're playing good soccer, players are stepping up, we're working hard and we're just not finding the back of the net."
The Red Hawks put up four total shots in the first half, but only one was needed to give them the game-winning edge. Emily Beenders scored her fifth goal of the season in the 35th minute, thanks to an assist from Erin Sullivan.
Goalkeeper Stephanie Tapolsky took the loss with four stops, while Alyson Burns staved off six attempts on the other end for her fourth shutout of the season.
Savannah Cutler, who found the back of the net in the Brewers' previous outing versus Oneonta, put up a team-leading two shots-on-goal, while Beenders put up two, including the game-winner.
The Brewers look to turn the corner, playing their next four games at home in Poughkeepsie. Vassar hosts Skidmore College for its conference-opener (Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.), Clarkson University (Friday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m.) and St. Lawrence University (Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016) before rounding out the homestand with non-conference play against Mount Saint Mary College (Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.).
