Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

VC Remains Undefeated, Settles For Scoreless Draw With New Paltz

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 14, 2016) — The Vassar College men's soccer team (5-0-1) remains undefeated through six games, settling for a 0-0, double-overtime draw with New Paltz at Gordon Field on Wednesday.

"Overall, we didn't concede, and we had a great attitude," coach Andy Jennings said. "A lot of positives."

Vassar goalkeeper Matt Marcelino logged a clean sheet with four saves, as did John Guzzo, who made five stops for New Paltz (3-0-3). This marks the second shutout for Marcelino and the first for Guzzo. Overall, the Brewers outshot the Hawks, 17-13.

"I thought the team played really well," Marcelino said. "We kept it together at the end. Had a lot of opportunities. Should have put them away in the first half, but the ball is round, and it happens like that, so I'm glad it came out with a tie and no goals against."

Alex Gonzales led Vassar with two shots-on-goal, including a penalty kick in the first half, while Reid Smith and Mattie Mrlik each tallied one.

"Up top, Mattie Mrlik was helping us out a lot," Marcelino said of the recently-crowned Liberty League and ECAC Rookie of the Week. "He was the guy we were passing to, he was the guy that we were able to reach when we had the long-ball opportunity, and he was the one that played the balls out and got us into the final third to take a couple chances."

On the other end, Arthur Angst, Manny Flory, Luke Dole and Coltan Goodwine totaled one shot-on-goal apiece.

Four the the Brewers' next five games are on the road, beginning at Oneonta on Tuesday, September 20. Kickoff at Red Dragon Field is set for 2 p.m.
