Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Sands, Gonzales Score In VC Setback

ONEONTA, NY (September 17, 2016) — After starting the season undefeated through the first six games, the Vassar College men's soccer team (5-1-1) suffered its first setback, falling 4-2 at Oneonta (4-2-0) on Saturday.

Tanner Sands opened scoring in the 28th minute, thanks to an assist from Reid Smith. The Brewers took a 1-0 edge into the break before the Red Dragons scored the first three goals of the second half.

In the 51st minute, Jake Foley found Anthony Passiatore, who shot from outside the 18 over the goalie and into the back of the net. Three minutes later, Hans Purtell scored the game-winner for Oneonta, rebounding the ball off a goalie save, 2-1.

The Red Dragons pushed their lead to 3-1 in the 64th minute. Whitman Hernandez dribbled by defenders before shooting into the top, right corner.

The Brewers continued to chip away, and four minutes later, Jose Novas passed around defenders for Alex Gonzales to find the back of the net, 3-2.

Oneonta doubled its lead in the 78th minute. Brandon Arango crossed into the box before Dillon Johnson used a one-touch shot to give the Red Dragons a 4-2 edge.

Both sides made two more shots apiece to end regulation, but neither side could connect. Overall, Vassar outshot Oneonta 16-15. Goalkeeper Matt Marcelino took the loss with eight saves, while Ryan Wilson earned the win with four.

Looking back at program history, the only other time the Brewers opened the season undefeated through the first six games was in 1994. That team ultimately finished 14-2-1 overall, including an ECAC NY-NJ Metro Region Championship.

Vassar returns to Poughkeepsie for one game before hitting the road for three. The Brewers host the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Kickoff from Gordon Field is set for 4 p.m.
