Brewer Women’s Volleyball Wins Vassar Invitational Saturday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 10, 2016) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team continued its strong play this weekend, taking another pair of victories Saturday to earn the Vassar College Invitational title in action from the Athletics & Fitness Center.

The two wins gave VC a 4-0 record for the weekend, as the Brewers defeated both University of Pittsburgh-Bradford and Alfred University in straight sets. Alex Sams earned All-Tournament Team, while sophomore Annie MacMillan was named as the Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Vassar 3, Pitt-Bradford 0
The Brewers clinched the Vassar Invitational with an early afternoon win against Pitt-Bradford, thanks to some great play from multiple players. Sophomore Annie MacMillan was in charge of the offense from the get-go, as she dished out 40 assists to go with her nine digs. MacMillan also did a great job distributing the ball around, as four Brewers had nine or more kills.

The first set was decided in the middle portion of the game, as VC went on a 9-2 run to take a 13-7 lead. Vassar extended its lead up to as much as six on a kill by Colette Cambey, and would roll to the win on the strength of 14 first-set kills.

In the second, Vassar's hitting continued to be a strength, chalking up 15 kills while hitting .294 for the game in taking a 2-0 match lead. Pitt-Bradford trimmed a large lead down 18-17 after a bad set by Vassar, but three straight service aces by Jorden Schreeder were the difference.

In the final set, Vassar trailed 15-14 after a block by Alma Turpin. The set continued to be a nail biter, with Vassar holding match point at 24-22 after an ace by Jane McLeod. The Panthers battled back to tie the game at 24, but Devan Gallagher chalked up her ninth and 10th kills of the match to claim the victory.

McLeod finished with 13 kills to lead the way for VC, also chalking up a double-double with 12 kills. Senior Sierra Tobin continued her dig party with 18 more in the first match, while Gabby Miller chalked up nine finishes as well. Gallagher hit .450 for the match, needing just 20 attempts to hit double-digit kills while Alex Sams added nine kills.

Vassar 3, Alfred 0
The Brewers got 18 kills from McLeod, as they hit .430 for the match to roll to the three-set win. McLeod hit .500 for the match, while Miller added 15 kills on 26 attempts, hitting .538. VC hit over .350 in every set, including chalking up 19 terminations in the second set while swinging at a .515 clip. MacMillan was once again superb, as she finished with a career-best 47 assists.

MacMillan wasn't just passing out success, but she also totaled four service aces and six digs for the Brewers. Junior Bria Corham posted six kills in the victory, and Schreeder and Tobin each have eight digs to lead the way for the Brewers in the 25-19, 25-14 and 25-15 win.
