Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Brewers Heat Up Late, Take Opener 3-0

NEW PALTZ, NY (September 1, 2016) — The Vassar College women's soccer team opened its 2016 campaign with a 3-0 victory at New Paltz, scoring all three goals in the final 25 minutes of competition on Thursday.

"I'm really happy with how the goals came about," head coach Corey Holton said. "We've been working a lot on the attack, and I thought it showed in the game. Just generally speaking, we kept the ball and played good soccer, so that's something to be proud of."

Four different Brewers collected points during the match: Jordyn Matthews notched four, netting the first two goals, assisted by Sara Seper (one point) and Rory Chipman (three points). Chipman potted the third and final goal, thanks to an assist from freshman Jordan Moss (one point).

Vassar undoubtedly won the possession battle, rattling off 22 shots to zero from New Paltz. Goalkeeper Stephanie Tapolsky earned the shutout after 90 minutes of play.

"We controlled play really well," Holton said. "We did have the majority of the possession, which is something we always try to do."

Although Vassar controlled much of the match, it took some time for the offense to catch fire — but when it did, the Brewers proved to be unstoppable.

"We had a couple really great opportunities early on," Holton said. "It took awhile for us to find the back of the net, but when we did, it opened things up."

Matthews tucked the ball into the side corner, thanks to an assist from Seper, to put the Brewers on the board in the 67th minute.

"The first goal came from two players right off the bench. They scored a goal because of their mentality more than anything - hardworking players."

Matthews continued to attack, slotting her second goal in the 84th minute, courtesy of a pass from Chipman. Just two minutes later, Chipman had her favor returned, scoring the third and final goal, which was assisted by Moss.

The sudden bursts of offense came when New Paltz went to a different formation, Holton said.

"We were able to exploit that quite a bit," she said. "We were able to find the space in the wings and exploit that space."

The Brewers remain on the road, playing their next match at New York University on Saturday, September 3 at 12:30 p.m.
