POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 9, 2016) — The defending champion Vassar College women's tennis team is tied for first place with Wellesley College after Day 1 of the annual Seven Sisters Championship.
The hosting Brewers and the visiting Blue both have two points thus far. Vassar beat Bryn Mawr College and Smith College by scores of 5-0, while Wellesley topped Mount Holyoke College and Smith by the same scores.
Mount Holyoke holds third place with one point after beating Bryn Mawr 4-1, while Bryn Mawr and Smith are tied for last place with zero points after their losses.
Against Bryn Mawr, Vassar cruised through doubles.
Kelsey Van Noy and
Morgane Flournoy won 6-0, 6-0 at two over Mariam Haider and Em Prozinski before
Hanna McGuire and
Shayna Becker came away with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at one over Tirsa Delate and Molly MacDougall.
The Brewers continued to roll in singles.
Dasha Ivenitsky defeated Lizzie Siegle 6-1, 6-0 at two,
Connie Yoo topped Kendall Baller 6-1, 6-1 at three, and
Courtney Geiss secured the shutout, beating Melina Koukoutchos 6-1, 6-2 at one.
Against Smith, Vassar handed out three bagels on their way to securing another shutout. Van Noy and Flournoy won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles over Morgan Barney and Janan Fugel, while Ivenitsky and Yoo won 6-0, 6-0 at two over Alexandra Steck and Leigh Johnston.
The Brewers didn't let up once they got to singles.
Kate Christensen defeated Noa Dubin 6-1, 6-1 at one, Geiss topped Samantha Peikes 5-2, 4-1 at two, and
Morgan Fitzgerald beat Joanna Kim 6-0, 6-0 at three.
The Seven Sisters Championship concludes Sunday, April 10. The Vassar women's tennis team plays Mount Holyoke at 10:30 a.m. before facing Wellesley at 3 p.m.
