Scarlett Breaks 5000 Meter School Record At Princeton Friday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 8, 2016) – The Vassar College men's team sent a small group of runners to the prestigious Sam Howell Invitational Friday evening in action hosted by Princeton University, and sophomore Michael Scarlett stole the show for the Brewers.

Scarlett set the new Vassar school record in the 5000 meter run, posting a time of 15:07.65 to eclipse the previous school mark of 15:10.00. The former Vassar record, set by Steve Money, has been on the books since the 2003 season and was the second-oldest existing school record before Scarlett broke it Friday. He finished fourth in his heat, as he ran a strong, tactical race.

"The pace was all over the place, 75 one lap, 71 the next then back to 73…It was difficult to keep a good rhythm but I knew I had to stay patient and be ready to compete in the final mile to run well," said Scarlett.

Junior Gabe Fishman dealt with wind conditions that gusted up to 20 miles per hour during the 800 meter run, but closed stronger than he has all season and posted a time of 1:56.44. Sophomore Philip Brown posted a strong ECAC qualifying time with a personal best of 15:16.58, finishing just behind Scarlett.

The Brewers also sent Luke Arsenault to the track on Friday in the 5000 meter run, as he ran in his first 5k at Vassar. The early pace changes were difficult on the freshman runner, especially as he was coming off a cold as of late. Arsenault ran a strong first two miles, but ended up finishing with a 16:07.82 as he looks to build on the performance going forward.

Vassar will be back in action Saturday at the Osprey Open at 10:00 a.m. in Galloway, NJ on the campus of Stockton University.
