POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 23, 2016) — The Vassar College women's lacrosse team pulled away in the second half to secure a 12-8 victory over visiting University of Rochester on Saturday.
With the win, the Brewers improve to 6-7 overall and 2-5 in conference play, while the Yellowjackets fall to 4-10 and 1-6 in the Liberty League.
Prior to the contest, Isabelle Goldstein, Paige Abramowitz and Kim Mulvehill were honored for their contributions to the program for Senior Day.
"They bring a lot to the team. They are three very hardworkers who set the tone in practice," coach Judy Finerghty said. "They help teach."
Goldstein (three goals, one assist) and Storm Sideleau (four goals) each posted four points, as five Brewers found the back of the net. Fiona MacLeod scored a hat trick, while Mulvehill and Julia Trudell each finished with one goal.
"It was such a full team effort," Finerghty said.
Defensively, Mulvehill, Brittany Botticelli and Kristin Caolo grabbed three ground balls apiece. Mulvehill also finished with a team-high three created turnovers and four draw controls, as the Brewers dominated the draws, 12-10.
Caolo picked up her fourth win, while Maire Prosak took the loss with two saves.
"Our freshman goalie stepped up and had some great saves," Finerghty said. "We've been working on techniques, and I think she took major leaps forward."
Madeline Levy led Rochester with three goals, while Cassie Mahar, Jamie Wallisch, Mara Karpp, Madeline Mullholand and Breanna Taylor all finished with one.
The Brewers never trailed as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Sideleau scored the first two goals before Goldstein capitalized on a man-up opportunity to cushion the lead. The Yellowjackets got on the board about midway through the half before Goldstein and MacLeod scored back-to-back goals to take a 5-1 lead into the break.
Rochester started the second half on a strong note, using a 4-1 run, broken up by Sideleau, to get within one, 6-5.
But Vassar outscored Rochester 6-3 the rest of the way behind a balanced attack. In that span, Mulvehill secured her 20th goal of the season, MacLeod notched her seventh and eighth, Sideleau scored her 35th, Goldstein captured her 30th and Trudell obtained her 25th.
Goldstein is now five points away from tying the all-time record for career points, as she currently has 235.
Vassar women's lacrosse plays its final two games on the road, facing Union College on Friday, April 29 at 4 p.m. in Schenectady, NY and William Smith College on Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. in Geneva, NY.
