POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 23, 2016) – The Vassar College women's tennis team, ranked No. 38 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, were pushed to the limit Saturday afternoon before eking by the Herons of William Smith in a thrilling 5-4 decision from Joss Courts on Senior Day.
The Brewers, normally stout in doubles play, were forced to play from behind going into singles after William Smith took two of the three pairs' matches. Vassar's No. 3 doubles team of
Morgane Flournoy and senior
Kelsey Van Noy started the day with an 8-1 victory to give VC the lead, but Hannah More and Michaelann Denton teamed to knock off
Hanna McGuire and
Shayna Becker at No. 1 8-4 to even the match.
The Herons earned the last doubles match at No. 2, as Alex Greenberg and Katarina Kostovic defeated sophomore
Morgan Fitzgerald and senior
Lauren Stauffer 8-2. In singles action, Becker would bounce back after her double's loss to deadlock the score at two thanks to a 6-0, 6-2 win from Becker.
Vassar's No. 6 player, junior
Connie Yoo, put the Brewers back on top with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Connie Froass to put VC up 3-2 on the scoreboard. Sophomore
Courtney Geiss pushed the Brewers to within one match of the team victory, as she conquered Greenberg at No. 2 singles in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-1.
The deciding victory would come next for the Brewers, taking a 5-2 edge plus the match win thanks to a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 5 singles from Flournoy. More captured her No. 1 singles match for the Herons with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Vassar's
Kate Christensen, while Denton knocked off Van Noy 7-6, 3-6 and 10-6 in the super tie-breaker.
The Brewers will be off for six days before heading to Troy, NY to battle the Engineers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute next Saturday, April 30 at noon in the Liberty League finale for both teams.
