POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 8, 2016) - The Brewers of the Vassar College women's tennis team are packing their bags for California to compete in five dual matches over the next two weeks of spring break. Competition in the West spans from March 13-18, with matches against California Lutheran University, Washington College (MD), Chapman University, Amherst College and Whitman College.
Last Time OutThe women's tennis squad put together an impressive performance last time it took the court, dominating a strong New Paltz team 8-1 on March 5 in Poughkeepsie. New Paltz scored just one single point in three matches of doubles play and Vassar's singles players took just one loss. This improves the Brewers' record to 5-2 on the season.
On Last Year's Trip The Brewers finished their tour of the Golden State last season with a 3-2 record. They started their trip with a 5-4 victory over No. 17 University of La Verne before suffering a tough 8-1 loss to No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer. They racked up their second win against No. 29 Whitman College with a 6-3 score, dropped an 8-1 decision to No. 4 Amherst College, and ended their spring break on a positive note with a decisive 7-2 match against No. 32 Chapman University.
CompetitionThis year, the Brewers will go toe-to-toe against California Lutheran University, Washington College, Chapman University, Amherst College and Whitman College. Below is a look at each team heading into next week's matches. The Brewers will travel to competition sites at Thousand Oaks, Irvine, Orange and Claremont — all in the Golden State.

A Look at the RegalsCurrently, the Regals of California Lutheran University are sporting a 3-2 overall and 1-1 in-conference record. So far, all of their matches have been played on their home courts in Thousand Oaks, CA. They are currently coming into competition on a loss, having fallen to No. 8 Arizona Christian on March 4. The Regals were coming into that match having taken two weeks off of competition; it didn't serve them well as they fell 6-3 to the Firestorm.
Last MeetingThe last time the Brewers and the Regals saw each other across the net was March 9, 2010 when they battled in California during spring break. The Brewers, then nationally ranked No. 21, came out decisively on top, sweeping the Regals 9-0.

A Look at the ShorewomenThe Shorewomen of Washington College have just started their season. They hold currently hold a 1-1 record, as the in-conference portion of their schedule has yet to begin. The Shorewomen are currently ranked No. 10 in the Atlantic South region. Senior April Weaver was named Shorewoman of the Week on March 1 after going 2-0 at No. 1 singles the week before and picking up a win over a nationally-ranked opponent. Weaver ranks No. 20 in the Atlantic South region and was also named the Centennial Conference Player of the Week for women's tennis for the fifth time over the course of her career. The Shorewomen are coming off their first win, an 8-1 victory over the Seahawks of St. Mary's College on Feb. 28.
Last MeetingThe Brewers and the Shorewomen have not competed against each other in at least 10 years.

A Look at the Panthers The Panthers of Chapman University will be entering competition off four consecutive losses. Their latest defeat came March 4 when they took a tough loss to Mary Washington. They will play their next six matches at home and hope to end their rut before facing off against the Brewers.
Last MeetingThe Brewers most recently faced the Chapman Panthers on their final day of competition of spring break last year. The Brewers clinched a strong 7-2 victory March 21, 2015 to finish their California stint on a high note. At the time, Vassar was ranked No. 30 and Chapman, No 32.

A Look at the Purple & WhiteSo far this season, the Purple & White have only competed in their opener at Williams College on October 3. The Amherst Women's tennis squad took a tough 9-0 loss that day and hasn't yet had the chance to improve their record from 0-1. The Purple & White then competed at the three-day Middlebury Invitational, where they got the opportunity to improve their confidence.
Last MeetingIn the 2014-15 season, the Brewers met the Purple & White on the road in California. The Brewers dropped one of their two spring break losses to Amherst with a final score of 8-1. Amherst was ranked No. 4 and Vassar was slotted No. 30 at the time. The Brewers No. 1 doubles team clinched the only victory for Vassar that day by a final score of 8-6.

A Look at the Missionaries The No. 22 Whitman College women's tennis team currently rests with a 5-5 overall and 4-1 in-conference record. The Missionaries have won their past three games. Most recently, Whitman bested Whitworth University, 8-1. Before that were two wins at a competition site in Oregon, where they beat George Fox University 6-3 and Willamette University by a decisive 9-0 score.
Last MeetingThe Brewers saw the Missionaries a year ago on their spring break tour, coming out on top with a 6-3 win. Vassar, ranked No. 30 at the time, won two of three doubles matches and swept No. 1-4 singles to ultimately earn the victory over then-ranked No. 29 Whitman.
Next on the Slate Once they return from their Californian cruise, the Brewers will host Liberty League opponent Skidmore College on the Josselyn Tennis on April 2 at 1 p.m.
