POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 31, 2016) – The No. 8 Vassar College men's volleyball team ended a historic month of March Thursday evening with yet another victory, breezing past No. 13 New York University in straight sets in a non-conference match in Kenyon Hall. Vassar earned the win with scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-18.
The Brewers ended the month with a 10-2 record in March, as the 10 wins were the most in the month of March since the 2012 season when VC earned 13 victories. It was another historic night for one of Vassar's seniors, as
Reno Kriz became the all-time leader at VC in sets played, breaking the tie he had with Patrick Donahue at 411.
Vassar (22-6) clicked on all cylinders on Thursday evening, hitting .366 for the night while holding the Violets (12-13) to just .066 on the night. VC totaled nine team blocks and served well, chalking up 12 service aces as well. The Brewers also won the dig battle 26-20 on the night.
In the opening set, the host Brewers hit .421 on their 19 swings, siding out at a 73 percent clip while pulling away early for the opening set win. In the second frame, Vassar used an 8-0 run at 4-2 to take a six-point lead at 10-4. NYU trimmed the Vassar edge to four once at 11-7 on an ace by Nick Benson, but Vassar promptly scored three straight and controlled the rest of the game.
In the final game, the Violets took an early 4-2 advantage, but VC powered back thanks to the hitting from
Christian Lizana and
Matthew Knigge, forcing a NYU timeout at 12-8. The Violets scored two points out of the timeout, but Vassar grew its lead up to as much as seven at 23-16, claiming the three-set win. Vassar avenged its earlier season loss to NYU, as the Violets earned a four-set victory over Vassar back on February 23.
Lizana had a breakout game for the Brewers, as he totaled 10 kills, three aces and three digs. It marked the third match this season that the junior outside hitter has gone over double digit kills. Kriz added another 10 kills to his ledger Thursday, posting four digs and four blocks as well, while Knigge added five kills, three aces and three assisted rejections.
Sophomore setter
Zechariah Lee, who was featured earlier in the day in a story about his student band fouronefour, had a strong day with 29 assists, three aces, two digs and three blocks. Junior libero
Trey Cimorelli posted a match-high nine digs for the Brewers, and
George Diehl posted four kills, two service aces and three blocks.
Quinn Rutledge added five kills for the Brewers, who earned their fourth win over a ranked team this season.
The Brewers will host Senior Day Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Athletics and Fitness Center, taking on the College of Mount Saint Vincent and Wells College for a non-conference tri-match.
