POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 2, 2016) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team honored its pair of seniors on Saturday, earning a 3-0 win over Wells College in non-conference action from the Athletics and Fitness Center.
Seniors
Reno Kriz and
Erik Halberg played their final games on the campus of Vassar College, and the two were the leading hitters for the Brewers Saturday, as Kriz posted a match-best 14 kills while Halberg added nine kills in the match.
Vassar (23-6) was never really tested, hitting .333 for the game while finishing with 46 kills to only the 26 from the Express (10-17). In the opening set, VC went on a 14-5 run with the score tied at three, taking control of the game as
Christian Lizana led the Brewers during the span with three finishes. In the second set, Vassar had to come from behind late to earn the set.
With the score 20-19 Wells in the stanza, Vassar chalked up four straight points to take a 23-20 lead. After a few points from the Express, Halberg and sophomore
Matthew Knigge pounded down kills to earn the 25-22 win in the second set.
The third set the Brewers take a commanding 23-11 lead through the beginning of the set before Wells exploded for a 12-1 run to pull to within one at 24-23. In what he has done many times before, setter
Zechariah Lee dished the ball out to Kriz who hammered down his final kill at home to give the Brewers the win.
Kriz needed just 25 attempts to earn his 14 kills, finishing with five digs as well Saturday. Halberg hit .227 for the match (9-4-22), while Knigge also chalked up eight terminations on 12 swings, blocking two Wells attempts. Nine different Brewers earned a kill on the afternoon, as
George Diehl added five kills as well for VC. Lizana finished with a team-high seven digs, and Lee posted 31 assists and two service aces.
Vassar will now turn its attention to the United Volleyball Conference Tournament this upcoming Friday afternoon at New Paltz, with time and opponent to be determined this afternoon. Check back at
