NEWBURGH, NY (March 24, 2016) — The Vassar College women's lacrosse team used two solid runs to beat Mount Saint Mary College 15-10 in Newburgh, NY on Thursday.
With the win, the Brewers improve to 3-2, while the Knights fall to 4-3.
The Brewers scored four unanswered in the first half and six straight in the second on their way to snapping a two-game skid.
Three Brewers notched six points in the victory.
Kim Mulvehill and
Storm Sideleau each totaled four goals and two assists, while
Isabelle Goldstein scored three goals to go along with three assists, three ground balls and three draw controls.
Julia Trudell potted two goals, while
Phoebe Hankins and
Olivia O'Loughlin tallied one apiece. O'Loughlin also picked up a team-high four ground balls with seven draw controls.
Katie Gattoni paced MSMC with four goals, while Claire Duffy netted three. Makayla Caso, Christina Ryan and Shannon McGuinness each tallied one.
After McGuinness opened scoring with a goal three minutes into the game, Vassar quickly responded with a 4-0 run. Mulvehill scored the next two goals for the Brewers, the first was assisted by Goldstein and the second by Trudell in an extra-man opportunity.
Trudell got her shot, thanks to a pass from Sideleau, before Mulvehill capped the surge with another goal, courtesy of an assist from Hankins, 4-1.
MSMC ended the half with a 5-2 run to lock it at 6 by the break. Gattoni and Duffy each highlighted the surge with two goals apiece for the Knights, while Sideleau and Trudell scored the the Brewers' only goals within that span.
While the Knights opened up scoring in the first half, the Brewers came out hot in the second. Mulvehill picked up her 14th goal of the season before MSMC knotted the game at 7 with Christina Ryan's man-up goal.
But Vassar answered with six consecutive goals. Goldstein and Sideleau secured two goals apiece in the run, while Hankins and O'Loughlin each tallied one.
Gattoni ended the scoring drought for the Knights with her 26th goal of the season before Sideleau and Goldstein found the back of the net for the Brewers, 15-8. Sideleau now has 13 goals on the season, while Goldstein has 11.
Duffy and Gattoni struck again for MSMC, scoring two man-up goals to end the half and cut the deficit to 15-10.
Kristin Caolo picked up the win for the Brewers with seven saves and 10 goals-allowed, while Amanda Picillo took to loss with 10 saves and 15 goals-allowed.
Vassar had a 34-19 shot and 29-21 ground ball advantage.
The Vassar women's lacrosse team plays its fifth of a six-game road swing on Wednesday, March 30 against Western Connecticut State in Danbury, CT. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
