MADISON, NJ (March 23, 2016) — The Vassar College women's lacrosse team rallied to force overtime, but ultimately fell in the extra period at Fairleigh Dickinson University - Florham, 12-11, on Wednesday.
After a hard-fought battle, the Brewers fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Devils improve to 3-4.
Kim Mulvehill (two goals, three assists) and
Isabelle Goldstein (three goals, two ground balls) netted the final two goals of regulation for the Brewers to deadlock it at 11-all, but Brianna Capobianco scored the only goal of overtime for the Devils to win their second straight.
The Brewers put forth a team effort, as six players found the back of the net.
Storm Sideleau and
Julia Trudell scored two apiece for the Brewers, while
Hannah Cho and
Phoebe Hankins each added one.
Kristin Caolo took the loss, allowing 12 goals with nine saves, while Megan Nemeth earned the win, surrendering 11 goals with seven saves.
Brienna Reasoner paced the Devils with four goals, while Brittni Calleo and Caitlyn Damon each had two. Cassidy Vastano, Samantha Holleritter, Laura Cannillo and Capobianco also added one.
The Devils took their largest advantage of the game, 3-1, in the first half, but the Brewers got within one, 5-4, by the break. Trudell scored the first goal of the game, thanks to an assist from Mulvehill before FDU scored the next three. After Sideleau ended the scoring drought, Vastano pushed the Devil lead back to two, 4-2.
Mulvehill passed to Hankins to get within one before Sideleau knotted it at 4-all with a self-made goal. Although Reasoner ended the half with a goal herself, the Brewers opened the second with momentum.
Trudell dished to Mulvehill, locking the game at 5-all to start the second before Goldstein put the Brewers ahead with her first goal of the game. After the Devils reclaimed the lead, Goldstein struck again in the half, 7-all.
The teams traded goals before FDU scored three straight midway through the half, 11-9. That's when Mulvehill and Goldstein tied the game with back-to-back goals to give Vassar a fighting chance in overtime.
Although the Brewers lost in the extra period, they look to carry the same aggressiveness into their next contest.
The Vassar women's lacrosse team remains on the road to face Western Connecticut State in Dansbury, CT on Wednesday, March 30 at 7 p.m.
