Goldstein Posts Six Points In Loss To No. 17 Bowdoin Thursday

BRADENTON, FL (March 17, 2016) -- Vassar College senior attack Isabelle Goldstein chalked up six points on Thursday morning against No. 17 Bowdoin College, but the Brewers were unable to stay with the Polar Bears in a 20-10 loss in action from the Spring Fling Tournament at G.T. Bray Park.

Goldstein earned her six points on a goal and five assists, which gave her 10 helpers on the season. The five assists were the most in a game for the senior captain since handing out five in a 17-8 win last year against Mount Saint Mary College April 21.

Things didn't start out great for the Brewers, as Bowdoin (2-3) scored the first three goals before Julia Trudell put VC on the board with 25:06 to play in the first half with help from Goldstein. The Polar Bears added three more in a row including a man-up goal to take a 6-1 lead. Vassar netted the next two thanks to tallies from Storm Sideleau and Trudell to cut the deficit to three with 13:21 left in the opening period.

Bowdoin used another three-goal spurt just before halftime to take a 9-3 advantage, but Goldstein scored her lone goal of the game with eight seconds left in the period to send the game to intermission at 9-4 in favor of the Polar Bears.

VC crept back into the game and got as close as four at 11-7 after Goldstein set up goals by Kim Mulvehill and Trudell, but four straight scores made it an eight-goal lead, as Bowdoin cruised to the non-conference victory.

Goldstein added three ground balls and four draw controls Thursday morning, while Trudell led the Brewers with three goals on three shots. Mulvehill had a solid all-around effort for VC, posting two tallies, two ground balls and three caused turnovers, and senior Paige Abramowitz had three ground balls. Fellow defender Darby Stahl posted three ground balls, while freshman Fiona MacLeod caused a pair of turnovers.

Freshman net minder Kristin Caolo started in net for the first time as a Brewers Thursday and shined, making 15 stops against the Polar Bears. Emma Beecher scored a game-high five goals for Bowdoin, while Mettler Growney finished with two goals and two assists. Annie Glenn added three goals and five ground balls, while Lindsay Picard was pivotal on draws with seven controls.

The Brewers struggled in the circle to gain possession of draws, losing the draw control battle 18-13, while midfield transition also hurt the Brewer cause after a 7-for-18 clear ratio. Bowdoin posted a 43-19 shot advantage, and edged Vassar in ground balls 24-19.

Vassar College (2-1) is off until next Wednesday evening, taking on Fairleigh Dickinson at Florham in non-conference action from Madison, NJ.
