Sideleau Shines In 16-11 Win Over Keene State

BRADENTON, FL (March 15, 2016) -- Vassar College sophomore attack Storm Sideleau netted a game-best four goals for the Brewers Tuesday, as VC opened its Florida trip with a 16-11 win over Keene State University in action from G.T. Bray Park in the annual Women's Lacrosse Spring Fling.

Sideleau, who was taking on one of the state schools from her home state in New Hampshire, wasted no time giving the Brewers (2-0) the lead with back-to-back goals over the first 2:11 of the contest. Junior Sydney Spadinger increased the lead to 3-0 just 27 seconds later with help from Phoebe Hankins, her second assist of the run.

Keene State (1-3) battled back with three unassisted goals, but senior Kim Mulvehill scored her first of three tallies on the day at 21:28 to start a three-goal spurt for the Brewers. Mulvehill also ended the run with a tally, as fellow senior Isabelle Goldstein scored the middle goal of the run while assisting on Mulvehill's second tally.

The Owls trimmed the lead to 6-4 on a Samantha Ballard score, but Sideleau and fellow sophomore Olivia O'Loughlin put VC up by four at 5:44 to play in the opening half. Keene State didn't go away, as Jackie Planchett and Tori Weinstock each scored unassisted just before halftime to send the game into the break with an 8-6 score line in favor of the Brewers.

After the intermission, Keene State got to within one thanks to a Meghan Malloy goal, but Vassar netted four of the next five goals to take a 12-8 lead, with the run being capped by Sideleau's fourth and final score of the game. Over the last 10 minutes, Vassar's defense would clamp down, as freshman Emily Hamburger scored her first collegiate goal to put the game away for VC.

Sideleau needed seven shots to net her four goals, while also posting two draw controls on the contest. Goldstein added five points on three goals and two assists, picking up four ground balls, three draw controls and seven caused turnovers. Mulvehill posted three goals for VC, as nine different Brewers were able to dent the net.

Junior captain Julia Trudell was in a giving mood Tuesday, posting a team-high three assists to go with a goal, and O'Loughlin also added two points on a goal and an assist along with a team-high four draw controls. Freshman Fiona MacLeod was great in the midfield, causing three turnovers and picking up two free balls, and defenders Paige Abramowitz and Darby Stahl each forced a pair of turnovers.

Sophomore Emily Chancey started and played the first half for VC, making two saves, before handing the goalkeeping duties over to Kristin Caolo. The freshman started the second half and stopped four shots in her second game as a Brewer.

The Brewers held a slight 28-23 edge in the shot department, while VC put 23 of its 28 shots on target. Vassar was also strong from box to box, going 11-for-14 on clears while forcing Keene State into a 10-for-23 clip on clear attempts. Vassar did struggle from the hash marks though, going 1-for-9 on free positions.

VC will finish its trip in the Sunshine State this Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m., taking on No. 17 Bowdoin College, again at Bray Field in Bradenton, FL.
