Last Time Out: The Brewers battled on the road last weekend in two Liberty League match-ups, first against Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday then St. Lawrence University on Sunday. The women cruised past RIT with a 9-0 bagel but suffered an upset as the Saints won the 5-4 nail-biter.
A Look At The Hawks: The match against Vassar is New Paltz's first contest of the spring season. The team has had an overall successful run thus far, besting three conference teams either 9-0 or 8-1 in the fall. Last year, the women finished 12-7 overall and boasted a perfect 3-0 conference record. The team sees the return of standout sophomore Carol Tyson, who finished with a 16-3 standing last year.
Previous Meeting: In the fall, the Brewers hosted a scramble, where New York University, Connecticut College, New Paltz and Vassar faced off. The Brewers finished play 5-0 against the Hawks. During the weekend,
Morgan Fitzgerald defeated Laura Tierney, 6-0, 3-6, 10-6, while
Kelsey Van Noy topped Emi Lewis, 6-0, 6-1.
Courtney Geiss was also victorious against Tyson, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3. In doubles play, Fitzgerald and
Kate Christensen bested Lewis and Tierney, 8-2, as pair Geiss and
Morgane Flournoy defeated Liz Palmer and Maryann Badura, 8-1.
Kate Spade: No. 1
Kate Christensen nabbed a Liberty League Honor Roll this week after going undefeated against RIT and St. Lawrence. The sophomore and partner Fitzgerald earned the only doubles point for the Brewers at three. Christensen's 6-1, 6-0 win over the Saints' Emily Wyman tied up the match early on at 2-all to keep Vassar afloat in the competition. This season, she stands with a 7-6 singles and 8-3 doubles mark.
Looking Ahead: The Vassar women's tennis team will fly to Southern California on Friday, March 11 for Spring Break competition. The women first face California Lutheran University on Sunday, March 13 in Thousand Oaks at 12 p.m.
