CANTON, NY (February 6, 2016) — In Day 1 of the Liberty League Championships, the Vassar College men's squash team fell 9-0 to St. Lawrence University and 8-1 to Bard College on Saturday. 

St. Lawrence 9, Vassar 0
St. Lawrence shut out Vassar, 9-0, as the Brewers fell in three each set. Vincent Mencotti (Birmingham, MI/Brother Rice) kept Lockie Munro on his toes to nearly take the first game 11-6 before falling 11-2 and then 11-6 for No. 1. 

Trying to give the Brewers a fighting chance for No. 5, Tim Boycott (Mbabane, Swaziland/Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA) kept the competition close, falling 11-5, 11-7, 11-3 to Derek Ng. 

Bard 8, Vassar 1
Vassar regrouped for an thrilling second competition. In perhaps the most exciting set for the Brewers, Mencotti defeated Rhys Nordstrom in four games. Mencotti jumped out to a 11-6 win before Nordstrom edged him 1-11. But Mencotti secured the win by outscoring him 14-12 and 11-7 in the next two games for No. 1. 

Bard then topped Vassar in three games, as Ayateru Maeda beat Timothy Veit (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde), 11-6, 12-10, 12-10. 

Seeking another taste of victory, Juan Fernandez (Colonia Chimalistac, Mexico/United World Coll Costa Rica) played Jack Smith to games, 11-7, 11-7, 11-13, 14-12, but fell in No. 3. 

The next five sets were decided in three games, but the Brewers wouldn't go down without a fight. It took five games, but Francesca Cornali defeated Richard Bryenton (Knoxville, TN/West), 11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 9-11, 12-10, for No. 9.

Alex Riccio (Portland, CT/Portland) also picked up a victory for the Brewers in Vassar's final set of the day, defeating Olivia Terzian in three games, 11-4, 11-5, 11-7. 

The Vassar men's squash team will play in Day 2 of the Liberty League Championships on Sunday. The Brewers will first face University of Rochester at 10 a.m. before playing Hobart College at 2 p.m. in Canton, NY.
