Vassar Edged in OT at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (February 13, 2016) — Senior Erikson Wasyl recorded his first double-double of the season, as the Vassar College men's basketball team fell, 71-69, in overtime at Skidmore College on Saturday.

Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) logged 19 points, 12 rebounds and two assists, as one of three Brewers to score in double digits. Sophomore Jesse Browne (Barrington, RI/Deerfield Academy) tallied a game-high 22 points, while freshman Paul Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry Collegiate School) scored two-shy of his career-high with 20 points.

Both teams shot about 43 percent from the floor, with Vassar outscoring Skidmore, 8-5, from the foul line.

Four Thoroughbreds scored in double figures: guard Edvinas Rupkus led his team with 17 points and eight rebounds, forward Erik Sanders finished with 14 points, guard Royce Paris chipped in with 11 and guard Chase Ta added 10.

The Thoroughbreds out-rebounded the Brewers, 40-38, and outscored them in second-chance points, 13-7. Turnovers also made a difference in the game, as Skidmore scored 14 points off Vassar's 11 giveaways.

Neither team led by more than two possessions, as the lead swapped hands 16 times in the contest.

The Brewers outscored the Thoroughbreds 33-28 in the first half before Skidmore outscored Vassar by the same amount in the second to deadlock it at 61.

Vassar led 56-52 at the 5:37 mark, but Skidmore rallied with seven unanswered points to take a 59-56 advantage. The teams exchanged field goals before Wasyl drilled a three to tie it at 61 with 22 seconds remaining in regulation.

Wasyl and Grinde combined to score the first five points of the extra period before the teams traded baskets. Sanders made a layup to tie it at 69-all before Rupkus laid in another to edge the Brewers, 71-69, with four seconds remaining.

The Vassar men's basketball team will play its final home game of the regular season Wednesday when it faces Bard College in the Athletics and Fitness Center at 8 p.m.
