Women’s Volleyball Topped By Clarkson In Liberty League Finals

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 5, 2016) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team battled as they have all season but a rally wasn't in the cards on Saturday, as the Brewers fell in the Liberty League Championship to Clarkson University 3-1 in action from Kenyon Hall. CU won with scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-22.

Vassar (21-10) ends its season after winning the regular season title in the Liberty League, but ran into a Clarkson squad that was firing on all cylinders offensively Saturday. The Golden Knights earned their fifth straight Liberty League title thanks to hitting .290 for the match, including getting 20 kills from Katrina Lane.

The Brewers were unable to get much down in the first set, as Clarkson libero Kate Isaksen was everywhere, posting 11 digs in the opening set. That allowed the Golden Knights to pull away, taking a 21-12 lead while holding off Vassar late to earn the opening set.

The second set saw Clarkson take another early lead, earning a 9-3 advantage after a kill from Rachael Aird. VC battled back into the set and tied the game at 22 on an attacking error by CU. With the score tied at 23, senior Gabby Miller pounded down a kill and followed with a service ace to even the match at a set apiece.

The third set saw Vassar lead midway through the set, as Jorden Schreeder registered an ace at 8-7, but CU posted four straight points to go ahead 11-8. VC pulled to within one at 15-14 after an attacking error by the Golden Knights, but CU went on a 7-1 run to take control while earning a 2-1 match advantage.

In the fourth set, both teams had long runs, as Vassar chalked up a 7-1 run following a 5-1 run by Clarkson to start the game. The Golden Knights would tie the game at 12 after a kill from Rachel Reusch, but Vassar notched three of the next four points including two aces from sophomore Annie MacMillan to force a timeout by Clarkson.

After the timeout by the Golden Knights, the visitors went on a big 9-1 read to take a 21-16 lead. VC trimmed the deficit to 23-22 after a kill from freshman Jane McLeod, but Reusch and Lane followed with terminations to give Clarkson the title.

Miller finished the match with 12 kills and 13 digs, earning Liberty League All-Tournament Team in her last match as a Brewer. Sophomore Devan Gallagher added 15 kills and nine digs Saturday to pick up All-Tournament Team as well, and McLeod lead all hitters for Vassar with 18 kills.

Senior Sierra Tobin added a team-best 20 digs for Vassar, and MacMillan finished with 46 assists and seven digs. Schreeder also added 12 digs for Vassar, and sophomore Lauren Ninkovich chalked up 13 digs as well. The Brewers hit .227 for the match, posting 52 kills on 163 attempts.

Clarkson saw Rachael Aird earn Tournament MVP honors after finishing with 15 kills, and Reusch also added 16 kills on 23 attempts to hit .652 for the match. Lane also picked up All-Tournament Team accolades for her 20 kills and seven digs, and Isaksen also racked up 27 digs to earn All-Tournament Team as well. Sophia Holms had eight kills and 19 digs, and Kendall Cheval posted 16 digs.

Vassar says good bye to Miller, Tobin and Sarah Roberts, after posting an amazing 20-win season.
