Vassar Closes Regular Season With 3-2 Loss At Union

SCHENECTADY, NY (October 29, 2016) — The Vassar College women's soccer team fell to Union College in the regular season finale on Saturday, 3-2. 

The Dutchwomen scored two late goals to hand the Brewers just their second loss in 10 games. Despite the outcome, Vassar will host a Liberty League Championship game on Tuesday, having notched the the No. 2 seed this past Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Bard College in Poughkeepsie, NY. 

The Brewers outshot the Dutchwomen 14-12 overall. Goalkeeper Stephanie Tapolsky took the loss for Vassar (9-7-1, 6-2 Liberty) with four saves, while Kelsey Harts earned the win or Union (8-5-4, 3-2-3 Liberty) with four. 

In the 14th minute, Audrey Pillsbury put the Brewers on the board with her seventh score of the season. Union leveled the game at 1-all twelve minutes later, as Katie Monahan netted her team-leading eighth goal of the year, thanks to an assist by Sydney Keane. 

The game remained deadlocked at one going into the break, but Vassar opened second-half scoring with a goal by Rebecca Andrews. Off a penalty kick, Andrews secured her team-leading ninth tally of the season to give the Brewers a 2-1 edge. 

Less than two minutes later, the Dutchwomen responded. Michelle Staples scored her third goal of the year, thanks to an assist from Keane. 

The game looked like it might head into overtime, but Aly Leahy notched the game-winner off a PK in the 85th minute. 

Vassar will host third-seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for the first round of the Liberty League Championship on Tuesday. Kickoff from Gordon Field is timed for 2:30 p.m.
