POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 1, 2016) — The Vassar College women's soccer team saw its record-breaking season come to an end in semifinals of the Liberty League Championships, falling 1-0 to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Gordon Field on Tuesday.
The Brewers (9-8-1, 6-3-0) finished their 2016 campaign with the most conference wins (six) in Vassar women's soccer history, while also tying for the highest postseason seeding in program history.
"I'm really proud of the girls for the effort," said coach Corey Holton, who led the Brewers to their second consecutive postseason appearance. "It was a great battle today. Both team had good players out there. We just didn't put away the chances that we had."
The second-seeded Brewers outshot their third-seeded visitors 15-9 overall, showing their determination throughout the contest. Midfielder Sara Seper pressed the entire way on offense and led the team with four total shots, two of which were on target.
Goalkeeper Stephanie Tapolsky took the loss with four saves, while Joey Lyons earned the win for RPI (14-4-1, 6-3-0) with three.
Vassar maintained possession early, putting up seven shots to RPI's two in the first half. Neither side was able to find the back of the net, as the game remained deadlocked at nil-nil going into the break.
The Engineers came out strong in the second half before finally connected in the 65th minute. After much movement at the top of the box, Emily Kaplan found Jacqui Richard, who struck just below the crossbar for the game-winner, 1-0.
Remaining aggressive the entire way, the Brewers put up four shots in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but were unable to find the equalizer.
After an incredible season, Vassar will graduate seven seniors in Rory Chipman, Phoebe Reuben, Kelsey Hamm, Emily Krebs, Rachel Marklyn, Jordyn Matthews and Tapolsky.
