POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 29, 2016) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team highlighted an emotional Senior Day with 13 service aces, as the Brewers knocked off Ramapo College in four games in front of an electric crowd in Kenyon Hall Saturday afternoon. VC earned the victory with scores of 25-16, 25-22, 19-25 and 25-17.
The win was big in so many ways for the Brewers, who move to 20-9 on the season with the victory. Vassar also snapped Ramapo College's 19-match winning streak on Saturday, while also picking up a valuable win over a Roadrunner team that was ranked No. 3 in the New York region. Furthermore, Saturday's victory was a historic one for head coach
Jonathan Penn, as he chalked up his 500
th win between the Vassar men's and women's volleyball programs.
Before the match, the Brewers honored their three seniors
Gabby Miller,
Sarah Roberts and
Sierra Tobin for their dedication to the program. The vibes spilled over into the first set, as the Brewers chalked up seven aces including six by Miller to roll to the first set win. In the period, the two teams were tied at seven, but Miller helped VC go on a 13-0 run behind five aces while
Devan Gallagher added two kills and a block.
The second set was very competitive all the way through, but Vassar was able to get five more service aces in the set while hitting .233 to take a 2-0 match edge. VC scored the opening five points of the set, and led by as many as seven at 24-17. The Roadrunners (23-4) wouldn't go away, thanks to a 5-0 run to make it 24-22, but freshman
Jane McLeod hammered down an
Annie MacMillan set to put VC up two games.
The third game saw both teams struggle offensively, though much of VC's struggles game due to Ramapo posting four blocks including three assisted rejections each by Samantha Main and Rachel Selmore. Nice hitting errors were too much for the Brewers to overcome, as Ramapo opened up 18-17 match by scoring eight of the last nine points.
The offense wouldn't stay grounded long for the potent Vassar attack, as McLeod and Gallagher combined for 15 terminations in the final set to push the Brewers to their 20
th win of the year. It marked the first 20-win season for VC wince the 2012 year, while it was the 15
th year with 20 victories since 1988.
The offense was paced by the hitting by McLeod, who went off to the tune of 22 kills, posting a .320 hitting percentage on 50 attempts. The 22 finishes tied her career-high, which came back against Carthage College.
The Brewers also got 14 kills from Gallagher, who hit .407 for the match while posting just three errors on 27 attacks. Tobin had a great Senior Day contest for VC, as she added 19 digs on the match, and Miller had another all-around strong game with four kills, seven aces, six digs and two blocks.
MacMillan continued to move up the record books for setting Saturday, as her 41 assists gave her 1070 for the season, which is the fourth-most in a year ever for VC. She jumped from No. 8 to No. 4 with her output, leaping No. 7 Rose Carman (1031), No. 6 Hilary Koenigs (1047) and No. 5 Hilary Koenigs (1068). MacMillan is now 17 assists behind Rachel Bartfeld for third on the single-season record book.
Vassar hit .208 for the match, posting 45 finishes on 125 attacks, while adding six team blocks and allowing just three aces all match. For Penn, it was his 342
nd win for the Vassar women's team, while posting 158 for the Vassar men's volleyball team.
"I
think what happened today, was that we were able to win the serve and pass game, our serving pressure is what really did it for us," said Miller.
"It feels really great to beat a team that's really good, another regionally ranked team...and all of the support we've had throughout the years really showed today," said Tobin.
Ramapo's Larysa Iwaskiw pounded down 23 kills for Ramapo on 63 attempts, adding 12 digs, as the Roadrunners posted a .179 hitting clip for the match.
VC concluded its regular season on Saturday, but more work is left to be done for the Brewers. Vassar will play host to the 2016 Liberty League Championships this upcoming weekend, November 4-5 in Kenyon Hall.
As the top seed, VC will take on No. 4 seed Rochester Institute of Technology Friday at 7:30 p.m., as Clarkson University and Union College will start the tournament festivities at 5 p.m. in Kenyon.
