SCRANTON, PA (October 26, 2016) – The Vassar College field hockey team netted a goal in each half Wednesday evening, blanking host University of Scranton 2-0 to tie the school record for victories in non-conference action from Fitzpatrick Field.
With the 13 wins this year, the Vassar squad is now tied with the 2000 team that also won 13 times that season. The Brewers also moved to 4-2 on the road this season, which ties for the most road wins in a campaign since that 2000 year as well.
The victory wasn't easy though for the Brewers, as the host Royals (5-11) came out of the gate early and forced sophomore keeper
Paige Amico to make a save just 52 seconds into the game. After that point though, Vassar fired the next four shots through the opening 22 minutes of the contest. At 22:01 of the opening half, VC opened the scoring thanks to
Megan Caveny's team-leading ninth tally of the season.
The goal was assisted by senior
Emma Bracken, as she pushed her pass to Caveny, who fired the shot in from seven yards out in front of the cage. The assist by Bracken moved her to within one of
Bianca Zarrella on the all-time list, as she posted her 15
th helper of her career. Caveny's tally was her 15
th of her career, tying her for 10
th all-time in goals scored in less than two seasons.
The host Royals would take the only other shot taken in the opening stanza, as Meredith Campbell fired just wide with nine seconds to play before the break to send the game into intermission with Vassar up one. VC outshot Scranton in the opening half 5-2.
In the second period, the Brewer offense would pin in their hosts, outshooting the Royals 12-2 while earning all eight penalty corners in the second. The offensive pressure would come to fruition in the 55
th minute, as sophomore
Alyssa More pushed a shot off the post. The deflection went right to senior
Hayley Beach, who deposited it for her sixth goal of the season and her 21
st over her four seasons at VC.
Vassar almost made it 3-0 minutes later, but a flurry of shots including two from
Storm Sideleau was unable to beat keeper Tate Ackerman. VC's defense would hold strong down the stretch, recording its 11
th shutout of the season, the most in Division III.
Vassar outshot the Royals 17-4 on the night, while earning a decisive 12-1 edge in penalty corners. Amico and
Liz Rotolo combined for the clean sheet, while Ackerman chalked up seven saves for Scranton.
"This game proved that when we play our game, we are extremely successful," said head coach
Michael Warari. "Scranton tested us from the beginning, so it was great to see us keep up intensity throughout."
The Brewers will have a chance to break the school record on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Hawks of New Paltz on the road at 1 p.m. in the final regular season game of the year.
