POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 25, — The Vassar College women's soccer team will host a Liberty League Championship game for the first time since 2010 after beating Bard College 3-0 at Gordon Field on Tuesday.
"The feelings in the locker room is just beyond excited," said freshman Savannah Cutler, who scored the game-winning goal before assisting on another. "Everybody is so proud that we've been working toward this moment all season long, and we finally accomplished it. It's great to see our goals come to fruition."
With the victory, Vassar notched its sixth conference win of the season, a new program record, to clinch the No. 2 spot in the Liberty League standings. Only No. 1 William Smith is ahead with 21 points.
Against Bard, the Brewers outshot their visitors 24-10 overall to secure their eighth win in nine games. Stephanie Tapolsky earned her third shutout of the season for Vassar (9-6-1, 6-1-0) with one save, while Kelsey O'Brien took the loss for Bard (7-10-0, 1-7-0) with 11 swipes.
"Just an awesome day today," coach Corey Holton said. "Really turned it on in the second half for sure. Just excited to have beaten Bard for the first time in the three years that I've been here."
After playing through a scoreless first half, the Brewer offense began to click coming out of the break.
Cutler notched the game-winner in the 46th minute, thanks to an assist from Rebecca Andrews. Andrews played the ball back to Cutler, who chipped the ice-breaker into the top left corner from the right corner of the goalie box.
The Brewers continued to attack, notching their second goal nine minutes later. Cutler broke away down the right side before playing through to Audrey Pillsbury, who dribbled along the right wing before striking from 10 yards out into the far left corner.
Vassar padded its lead to 3-0 in the 73rd minute. Emily Krebs and Rory Chipman set up a shot for Sara Seper, who rocketed her first goal of the season into the top of the box.
Both sides put up two additional shots the rest of the way before time expired.
The Brewers are back in action on Saturday, Oct 29. Vassar will travel to Schenectady, NY for its regular season finale against Union College. Kickoff is timed for 2 p.m.
